Circular trails of varying lengths, churches built in widely different periods, and a waterfall give Ljungskile a variety of facets. There are also places by the water and the natural and cultural landscape of Bredfjället. When planning, it is worth considering what makes each place distinctive: some trails are defined by their length, others by steep sections, seasonal use, or specific starting points.

Circular trails and routes with different profiles

The Märtalederna in Ljungskile comprise two circular routes: one is 4.3 kilometres long and the other 6.5 kilometres. Salt till sött adds another option, with an approximately 6-kilometre circular tour from the shore of Ljungskileviken to the small lake Skarsjön. The easiest place to start this tour is Ljungskile main railway station; another starting point is Ljungskile Folkhögskola. Information about starting and ending points helps you get a sense of the route before setting off. Trail conditions and markings may change, so check the conditions before your tour.

The Skarsjöleden has a different profile: this circular trail goes around Stora Skarsjön, east of Ljungskile on Bredfjället. It is hilly, with steep sections on forest paths, over rocks, and on gravel. While the Märtalederna and Salt till sött can be compared by distance, the Skarsjöleden is defined above all by its terrain and surface.

At Norra Fjället, there is a 2.5-kilometre illuminated route for walking and running, which is also used for skiing in winter. The hiking trails and ski tracks there are accessible to everyone; conditions may vary by season. If you are planning to go skiing, check the conditions in advance.

Silverfallet is a 15-metre-high waterfall in Ljungskile. The nearest car park is about 700 metres past the Skarsjövallen sports ground; from there, it is approximately 1 kilometre on foot. Check local conditions before setting off.

By the water: stroll, swim, and explore the surroundings

The Strandpromenaden Ljungskile is an easy waterside route, suitable for a short walk and for families with children. Badhusparken includes the themed playground “Småkrypens värld”. Kungsparken is a bathing spot in Ljungskile, and the Ljungskile Kayak Center is located at the marina in Ljungskileviken. These offer different ways to enjoy the water: a waterfront path, a bathing spot, and a kayak center at a small boat harbor.

Churches, Lyckorna, and local history

The two churches mark different periods in history. Ljungs gamla kyrka was probably built in the 12th century or early 13th century. Ljungs kyrka, by contrast, was built in 1901–1902 in the Neo-Gothic style typical of the period. The considerable span of time between the churches makes their different histories a tangible cultural theme for a visit to Ljungskile.

Lyckorna in Ljungskile was founded in 1877 by landowner Robert MacFie as a seaside resort with a long tradition. Musselbaren, located in Lyckorna’s old clock tower, serves fresh blue mussels with classic accompaniments. Lyckorna thus brings together the history of the seaside resort and a contemporary culinary offering, without requiring a longer excursion or a particular itinerary.

Bredfjället: natural and cultural landscape

Bredfjället is a 10-square-kilometre wilderness and cultural landscape of forests, marshes, streams, and around 30 lakes. Numerous historical and cultural remains have also been preserved there. They tell of a hard life and poverty. Nature and history are both part of the character of this landscape, while the trails in Ljungskile each have their own distances or terrain profiles.

The local events calendar also has an annual connection to the area: every October, Ljungskile Friluftsklubb organizes Bohuslän’s largest orienteering competition.
