The Sjuntorp cotton mill was founded as early as 1813. Together with the largely preserved factory buildings, it forms a distinctive cultural focal point; to the north of the town, you’ll also find the Sjölanda bathing area by Lake Trehörningen. This means there are several different themes to choose from during a stay in Sjuntorp: industrial history, activity and water.

Industrial history in a rural setting

The largely preserved buildings of Sjuntorps Fabriker illustrate industrialisation in a rural setting. In Sweden, the industrial area is classified as a “riksintresse för kulturmiljövården” (an area of national interest for cultural heritage conservation). The cultural focal point is therefore defined not only by its early founding date, but also by its built environment. If you’re interested in industrial history beyond the big cities, you’ll find a clear thematic focus here.

Culture in a specific place

A different scale can be seen in the Daggelina sculpture. It stands in the playground in the Bandgrinden neighbourhood of Sjuntorp. Unlike the industrial heritage, Daggelina is a single work of art in a precisely identified location. This offers two distinct perspectives on culture: a largely preserved industrial environment that illustrates an era, and a single work of public art.

Swimming in a pool or in the lake

The water at Sjuntorps sim- och idrottshall is kept at a constant temperature of 34°C. As operating details can change, check the latest information before visiting. The Sjölanda bathing area by Lake Trehörningen is nearby, north of Sjuntorp. It has sandy and grassy areas, as well as swimming options from a shallow beach or a jetty. The two water options are therefore quite different: the pool has a specific water temperature, while the beach, jetty and different types of grounds shape the swimming environment at the lake.

The “Sjölanda” stop on the road is a useful landmark for the Sjölanda bathing area; bus route 630 stops there. Check the timetable before travelling, as public transport services may change.

Activities at the sports complex and between towns

Sjuntorps IP sports and leisure complex has an outdoor gym for strength training. For road cycling, attractive routes run, for example, between Trollhättan, Sjuntorp, Upphärad and Velanda. These options appeal to different planning interests: strength-training facilities at a specific location or road cycling on routes between several towns. You can decide whether you’d prefer a specific sports facility or a regional network of routes during your stay.

Stommens gård equestrian centre is also in Sjuntorp and is run by Norra Älvsborgs Ryttarklubb. A municipal environmental assessment document from June 2024 describes two stables with a total of 30 stalls, an indoor riding arena, two paddocks, a parking area, an uncovered manure storage area and 12 hectares of turnout pasture. These details provide a specific overview of the facility’s layout and size. If its facilities are important for your plans, check the latest information, as details may change.
