The Lina ferry crosses the Göta Canal in Töreboda in just 20 to 25 seconds. It connects the western and eastern halves of the town for pedestrians and cyclists. The ferry service was established in 1919 by retired locomotive driver Oskar Lindhult. The Västra stambanan railway line also crosses the Göta Canal in Töreboda: here, the railway crosses the waterway.
The canal and finding your way around town
Töreboda lies between Lake Vänern and Lake Vättern. The railway station is also right next to the Göta Canal; you can reach Töreboda by train on the Västra stambanan line. In summer, the tourist information office is open at the marina, in the same premises as Visthuset. Outside the summer season, you can get information at the town hall and the library.
The Göta Canal has 58 locks and is used by thousands of boats every year. The ferry in Töreboda is a short crossing on this larger waterway. This makes it possible to discover very different aspects of the canal locally: as a link between the two halves of the town, as a historic transport route and as a setting for waterside activities.
Churches, museums and crafts
Älgarås is home to one of Sweden’s few surviving medieval wooden churches. Its medieval furnishings include a baptismal font, a Marian altar and a triumphal cross. One bell bears a runic inscription and dates to the 13th century. Anyone interested in church architecture and historic furnishings will find several specific details here to explore individually.
The Töreboda-Björkängs local heritage museum is housed in a former trading warehouse dating from 1881. Hantverk kring Kanalen offers another connection between crafts and canal history: textile, ceramic and silverwork are displayed in a former warehouse right beside the locks at Hajstorp. The venue is run by five women artisans.
Birdlife and industrial history
Five nature reserves extend across Töreboda Municipality. At Borreboda dammar, nature watching and industrial history meet. Around 40 bird species can be observed there in summer. Visitors can follow a nature trail and use an information board and a bird book; a renovated birdwatching tower with a landing stage is also available.
The clay pits at Borreboda dammar are part of the area’s industrial history. In 1908, the tile factory in Töreboda began producing bricks, roof tiles and drainage pipes there. The site thus preserves an industrial heritage from the 20th century that can be explored alongside its birdlife.
Trails and activities
Hälsans stig is a 4.5-kilometre walking trail in Töreboda, running mostly alongside the Göta Canal. For a day’s cycling, a route of around 4.4 kilometres each way connects Töreboda and Hajstorp via the car-free towpath beside the canal. These two distances offer clear guidance for different outings: a walking trail in Töreboda and a cycling route between two named places.
Älgaråsleden has three wind shelters. Älgarås, Åsebol and Undenäs are named as possible starting or finishing points. Moskogens outdoor recreation area also has a nine-hole disc golf course. Alongside the trails, there is therefore a specific sporting activity and several marked reference points to choose from for your outings.
On the Göta Canal stretch within the municipality, between Gastorps bro and Järnvägsbron in Töreboda, anyone may fish from the bank. Swimming is permitted in the Göta Canal, but not within 50 metres of locks and bridges. Töreboda Golfklubb has an 18-hole parkland and woodland course. At the tenth hole, there are 100 metres of water between the tee and the green.
Canal-side atmosphere and regional fare
Hajstorp Slusscafé is right on the Göta Canal between Sjötorp and Tåtorp. It serves an organic breakfast, baked goods and savoury pies, along with Fairtrade refreshments and products featuring cakes from a local bakery. The selection combines local products with the canal-side setting. The café thus adds a culinary dimension to the area’s cultural and active discoveries.
