Kyrkesund is an old fishing community in the northwest of Tjörn. Its maritime history is evident along the road to the harbour: white wooden houses and red boathouses line it, built during the herring seasons of the 18th and 19th centuries. When planning your trip, you can take in the village’s history and maritime landmarks, as well as the Linneviken bathing area and the ferry connection to Härön. You can tailor your stay to local history, swimming or a hike on the island.

Fishing history and notable places

At the southern entrance to Kyrkesund is Kålhuvudet, a rendering works dating from 1780 that can still be visited. Another glimpse into the village’s history is Villa Solfrid: Elin Sundberg, also known as “the gold miner’s daughter,” had the large stone house built in 1916. Today, it is a museum with period interiors and atmosphere. Sankt Olovs valar adds another maritime landmark and is considered one of the best-known sea marks in Bohuslän. These places represent different aspects of history: a rendering works, a house with a museum and a well-known sea mark.

Linneviken: swimming and getting there

The Linneviken bathing area has a sandy beach and a floating bathing jetty. The beach slopes gently and is considered suitable for families with children. The bathing area is partly adapted for accessibility and has a staircase. If these details matter for your plans, check the conditions on site. There is signposted visitor parking beside Linneviken at the village entrance. From there, it is about a ten-minute walk to the ferry terminal. Check the parking rules before you set off; for the crossing, it is worth checking the timetable for your chosen day.

Ferry trip and hiking trails on Härön

From Kyrkesund, you can reach Härön on an approximately five-minute ferry crossing. The island was declared a nature reserve in 1999 because of its species-rich flora and natural values. Härön has hiking trails of various lengths; you can buy a hiking map on the ferry. This gives you two different options for your stay: exploring the sights and swimming in Kyrkesund, or hiking on Härön. The approximate crossing time is a useful guide for planning, but does not replace checking the timetable. Before going on a hike, also check the trail conditions.

Getting to Pilane

To get to Pilane, turn at Vallhamnskorsningen where the signs point to Kyrkesund, drive past Kållekärr and continue for another three kilometres. At the roundabout, turn right towards Kyrkesund. After another 4.5 kilometres, turn left at the signs for Pilane and Gravfält. Check the route before setting off, as route details may change.
