Grundsund is a well-preserved fishing village: boathouses and small houses crowd along the cliffs, the quay and the harbour canal. If you are planning a stay, you can choose between local history, coastal paths and activities on the water—and set your own priorities for the trip.

Village character, architectural history and film culture

The older parts of Grundsund on both sides of the canal are designated protected settlement areas and surroundings, which are taken into account in municipal development plans. Individual buildings also tell the story of the village’s development: the chapel was built in 1799. A major renovation gave the church its current cruciform layout in 1893. As you walk around the village, you can connect these different architectural styles with its fishing-village character.

The cultural scene includes the cinema on Skaftö at Folkets Hus in Grundsund, where films are shown occasionally. The TV series Saltön is also associated with the village: much of the series was filmed on Skaftö, particularly in Grundsund. If you are interested in the filming locations, you can combine a visit to the village with a look at its historic buildings, rather than limiting your exploration of its cultural history to individual buildings.

Coastal paths offering different perspectives

The coastal promenades between Skäddhålan and the bathing spot in Vigerna follow the rocks and the shoreline. Along the way, there are views across the rocky archipelago, as well as a cave and information boards about the landscape. The walk offers a sense of the coastline and its surroundings. This makes it a good option if you would rather explore Grundsund on foot and along the coast.

The Skuddevigeleden on Ösö offers a different route. This challenging nature trail crosses the hills and connects Skutevik with the onward path towards Hårsäckan. The views include the sea and the outer archipelago. If you are looking for an easier hiking option, there is also an easy path from Grundsund towards Islandsberg. The different route descriptions can help you choose a walk to suit your preferences.

A cultural-historical stop lies on the Kuststigen section between Fiskebäckskil and Grundsund: the old cholera cemetery is considered a particularly noteworthy site. The trailhead for the Munkeviksleden is also nearby, at the foot of Åseberget. From Grundsund and Stockevik, you can reach this trailhead on foot or by bicycle along the coastal path.

Guided tours and activities on the water

If you would like to learn more about cultural history or topics related to Grundsund while you are there, consider the guided walks offered by Skaftöguiden. The programme includes cultural-historical and themed walks in the village, as well as guided nature walks throughout the year. This gives you the choice between exploring independently and joining a guided tour.

On the water, Balanspunkten – Kajak i Grundsund offers kayak rentals, courses and guided tours around Skaftö. The courses take place in small groups, and safety exercises are a fundamental part of the training. At Grundsund guest harbour, there are alongside berths at Östra Kajen and stern-line berths at Västra Kajen. These details are especially useful for travellers who want to combine their stay with kayaking or time at the harbour.

Bathing spots and practical information

Munkevik lies between Grundsund and Stockevik. The bathing beach has a larger-stone surface, and there is a designated barbecue area at the bathing spot. From Grundsund, you can reach Munkevik via the coastal promenades and the Munkeviksleden, or by taking the combined cycle and pedestrian path to Stockevik. This makes it possible to combine a visit to the bathing spot with the surrounding paths described above.

Hårsäckan offers a different bathing experience, with stairs and handrails. Good swimming skills are required for swimming there, and the spot is not suitable for children. This distinction matters when choosing between the two places: Munkevik is characterised by its stony surface and barbecue area, while swimming at Hårsäckan comes with a clear restriction.

The paths through the village are also part of finding your way around. In Grundsund, stairs, paths and jetties may not be closed off or made private. This keeps access open to the landing stages located close to the houses. When choosing accommodation for your stay, you can first consider whether local history, hiking trails, bathing spots or activities on the water should be your main focus. This lets you plan your trip around the experiences you actually want.
