Bro brings together church history, three culture trails of different lengths and climbing opportunities in Brodalen. At 0.5 kilometres, the Södra Culture Trail is the shortest route and forms a circular loop past archaeological traces. The Norra and Östra trails are 2.2 and 3.5 kilometres long respectively, and are rated moderate; the Broälven also offers a connection with nature. If you are looking for a holiday rental for a stay in Bro, you can first consider whether local history, hiking, riverside scenery or climbing will shape your trip.

Church and Historical Traces

Bro Church stands in the centre of Brodalen, about 100 metres west of the Broälven, and has medieval origins. An investigation in 1938 identified the foundations of a smaller Romanesque church. Later features also form part of this history: in 1709, the roofs of the chancel and nave were decorated with polychrome paintings by Christian von Schönfeldt. Bro Old Vicarage was built in 1705. Together, these details offer different points of reference in time—from medieval origins and Romanesque foundations to the architectural and artistic history of the early 18th century.

Three Culture Trails with Different Route Profiles

The Södra Culture Trail is a 0.5-kilometre circular loop in Brodalen. It passes Tingshögen and three Iron Age burial mounds. At this length, it is the shortest of the three routes described here; its loop and archaeological stops give it its own distinctive profile.

The Norra Culture Trail is 2.2 kilometres long, rated moderate, and leads to Störreberg in Brodalen. Along the route are Bronze Age rock carvings depicting horses. The style of the horse depictions is said to occur exclusively in Störreberg. The Norra Trail also passes Rydstrandsgården. The route thus combines rock art and another historic destination with the walk to Störreberg.

The Ă–stra Culture Trail in Brodalen is 3.5 kilometres long and is also rated moderate. It passes a 12th-century castle ruin, the outline of a 13th-century house, the natural formation Bropelaren and a railway water crane from the steam-locomotive era. Here, architectural traces from different centuries sit alongside a natural formation and a relic of railway history. By comparison, both the Norra and Ă–stra trails are rated moderate, and the Ă–stra Trail is 1.3 kilometres longer. Route details may change, so check the latest information before setting out.

The Broälven and Climbing Opportunities

The Broälven flows south towards Brofjorden and can be reached from Brodalen. Its upper reaches contain important spawning and breeding grounds for sea trout. The river is therefore not only a geographical landmark, but also a habitat of importance to this fish species.

Brodalen, in northern Lysekil, offers climbing of a high international standard. Since 2017, the facilities have also included an indoor venue. Bro Boulder has around 200 m² of bouldering walls with different angles. This gives you several distinct options to plan your trip around: local and church history, culture trails with archaeological and architectural stops, riverside scenery or climbing.
