The Vänermuseet is located on the shores of Lake Vänern in Lidköping. Its aquarium, beach park and waterfront paths offer different perspectives on the water, alongside historical craft traditions, a market and a centrally located city garden.
Lake Vänern, the museum and waterfront paths
The Vänermuseet aquarium features fish species from Lake Vänern: pike, perch, roach, vendace, asp, white bream and eel. The museum presents 400 million years of history and covers topics including shipping and trade, the people who lived at the lighthouses, and the everyday lives of peasant fishermen. Children can take part in activities about ships and shipwrecks. The same building therefore focuses both on the lake’s wildlife and on stories about life with the lake.
Framnäs beach park has a sandy beach with shallow, child-friendly water. Those who want to swim in deeper water can use the 150-metre-long bathing jetty, which has handrails and a ramp. The main differences between the beach and the jetty are the water depth and the facilities available at each.
The waterfront promenade stretches from central Lidköping to Sjölunda. Some paths run along wooden boardwalks through the reeds, and platforms offer views of Kinnekulle. These are useful landmarks for anyone looking to add waterside walks to their stay without committing to a walking time or a specific distance.
Market, local history and crafts
A market with traders is held at Nya Stadens Torg on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The town hall is now a landmark of Lidköping. The two places represent different aspects of city life: the market takes place on set days of the week, while the town hall represents the town’s history as a civic landmark.
Limtorgstryckeriet was established in Grästorp in 1878 and operated there in its original condition until 1975. It was later moved to the Limtorget cultural reserve in Lidköping. The Vänermuseet manages and displays the Limtorgstryckeriet collection, with the support of a few volunteers. More modern equipment and machinery have been added to the collection. Demonstrations are arranged on request.
Porcelain craftsmanship is also part of the city’s cultural heritage. Tours at the Rörstrand Museum explore Rörstrand’s nearly 300-year history of porcelain. They explain how porcelain was made and what it was like to work in a noisy porcelain factory. Details of the tours may change, so check before your visit.
Stadsträdgården and seasonal events
Stadsträdgården is in the heart of Lidköping and is an easy walk from Nya Stadens Torg and the guest harbour. The garden has a playground and a pond. The paths are adapted for prams and wheelchairs, so the whole group can get around together.
In summer, the Dina stage hosts music and other events, including evenings in the Sommar i trägårn series. For planning purposes, the market takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays, the stage programme is seasonal, and demonstrations at Limtorgstryckeriet are arranged on request. These different schedules help distinguish regular, seasonal and pre-arranged events.
