Two themes stand out when visiting Ljung: trails and local history. Hälsans stig offers a flexible framework for planning, while Gäsene Courthouse, the history of the courthouse site and other local buildings provide cultural and historical points of interest.

Walking Hälsans stig

Hälsans stig follows sidewalks and pedestrian and cycle paths around the communities of Ljung and Annelund. You can start anywhere along the route and walk it in either direction. The route crosses the Nossan River and passes a burial ground with several stone formations near Hjältes väg. It also passes Gäsene Courthouse.

The burial ground and the courthouse offer different historical points of reference along the route: one features several stone formations, the other a building with a courtroom and museum. Together with the crossing of the Nossan, these stops give the route a variety of points of interest, without requiring a particular starting point or direction.

Court history at Gäsene Courthouse

Gäsene Courthouse has a well-preserved courtroom dating from 1776. The original floor plan from 1776 has been preserved on the ground floor, which now houses a court museum. Most of its furnishings are originals from 1776. The same building thus brings together the original floor plan, courtroom and mostly original furnishings with its current role as a museum. Guided tours of the museum are available by prior booking.

The history of the courts extends beyond the building: Ljung has served as the courthouse site for Gäsene hundred since the 17th century. In 1644, Ljung was established as a courthouse site and described as “rettan tingsstad.” This historical role adds another local point of reference to a visit to the court museum.

A 2022 cultural and historical building survey also offers the opportunity to explore on foot the buildings in Ljung that reflect the community’s development. This broadens the focus from the courts to Ljung’s architectural development. Ljung Mission Church was designed by architect Per Mårtensson of Gothenburg and provides another specific link to the area’s architectural history.

Other chapters in the area’s development

The railway is also part of Ljung’s history. When the line between Borås and Herrljunga was built, Ljung became a railway community. The section of railway between the two towns was completed in 1863. The courts and the railway thus represent different chapters in the area’s development: one points to Ljung’s role as a courthouse site, the other to its growth as a railway community.
