In Nossebro, local history, paths through mixed woodland and the Nossan River offer different ways to explore. The Cultural Walk leads to stories about buildings, artworks and other places; from March to November, the Nossebro Marknad regularly brings market stalls to the heart of the community. There are also activities by the water and on Högaberget—specific reasons to take a closer look at Nossebro for your trip.
Local History Between the Mill, the Railway Station and the Houses
The Cultural Walk in Nossebro opened in April 2009 and was updated for its tenth anniversary in 2019. Signs at buildings, artworks and other places provide information, stories and pictures from different historical periods. This lets you encounter local history as more than just a date: the stops connect different places with their respective stories.
One example is Kerstinsås kvarn: after restoration, the mill resumed grinding grain in 2007. The artwork “Blommande Nossan” by Tony Abrahamsson (1954) is in the water just below the mill. Stallaholm offers a different historical perspective. The name once referred to both a village and a large estate; in the 17th century, the estate belonged to the noble Papegoja family.
The railway station building also offers several points of interest. The upper floor houses the collections of former postmaster Åke Bergmer about the VGJ and other narrow-gauge railways in Västergötland. Temporary exhibitions are held in the former waiting room. Another facet of local history is shown by Retrolägenheten Andra Våningen: a unique three-room apartment with furnishings typical of the 1960s.
The Lödöse–Skara Pilgrim Trail runs through Nossebro for part of its route and follows a medieval pilgrimage route. This brings a historic route into focus alongside the stories of individual buildings and collections.
Market Day and Activities in the Centre
The Nossebro Marknad is held from March to November on the last Wednesday of each month. The stalls offer locally produced and organic products, including honey, juice and jam. The selection may vary from one market day to the next. If you’re planning your visit around the market, check the date in advance.
In the centre of Nossebro, Essunga Library offers books, newspapers, computers, learning opportunities and cultural activities. The events programme may change. This means there are different options for your stay: the market and its products, the historical stops on the Cultural Walk and cultural activities in the town centre.
Paths and Nature by the Nossan
On Högaberget, exercise trails and illuminated paths wind through mixed woodland; the difference in elevation is about 15 metres. On the other side of the suspension bridge, by the large oak, there is a barbecue area.
The Nossan also adds to the choice of activities. Near Nossebro, the river is considered a natural waterway for canoeing and kayaking. Canoes can be rented at Nossebro bad & camping for paddling on the Nossan; check current availability and arrangements before your trip.
The Nossan is rich in fish and is home to 19 fish species. Fish populations and regulations may change. At Nosse Kvarn, a passage through the cellar leads to a small island in the Nossan, below the beautiful stone bridge. Access may depend on the applicable opening arrangements.
Swimming as Another Option
Nossebro bad & camping has a heated outdoor pool measuring 25 metres, with a water slide and an adjoining children’s pool. Seasonal opening hours may vary. There is also a 12.5-metre indoor pool with an adjustable floor. If you’re planning to use the outdoor pool, check its seasonal opening arrangements in advance.
