At the first lock on the Dalsland Canal, the character of Köpmannebro comes into view: the guest harbour is here, and the lock connects the town to an extensive waterway system. Bridges, older buildings and the history of the railway give the canal a cultural and historical dimension. If you are interested in waterways and technical cultural landscapes, Köpmannebro offers several perspectives on the same townscape.

The Dalsland Canal as a guide

The Dalsland Canal is a 253-kilometre navigable waterway from Köpmannebro to Östervallskog. The lock in Köpmannebro is the first and also the largest on the canal. It leads from Lake Vänern into Lake Svanefjorden and onwards to Östervallskog in Värmland. From Köpmannebro, the canal provides access to a waterway system with 31 locks; the lock station itself has one lock chamber. This makes it possible to distinguish the individual facility on site from the larger waterway network. Many journeys north along the Dalsland Canal begin in Köpmannebro, giving the town a special role as a starting point for travel in this direction.

Guest harbour, waiting quay and swing bridge

Köpmannebro guest harbour is located by the first lock and offers berths with electricity, toilets, showers and waste disposal. On the opposite side of the canal is a waiting quay for boats passing through the lock. The harbour and quay therefore serve different purposes: the facilities mentioned for guests are here, while boats wait there to pass through the lock. A swing bridge also crosses the canal immediately below the lock. Its clearance is 2.25 metres; operating regulations may vary. If you plan to pass under the bridge by boat, check the current regulations in advance.

Cultural landscape with railway history

Köpmannebro is a cultural landscape with bridges, a lock and older buildings. The area around the town is part of the Dalsland Canal area of national interest. The history of the railway stations also follows a clear timeline: the first station was completed in 1880 and used until 1937, when the new station came into operation. This second station was demolished in 1973; since then, Köpmannebro has had no railway station. Another link to railway history is the railway bridge over the Dalsland Canal. It was replaced in 2002 and has a footpath leading to the island. As access conditions may change, check them before your visit.

Vibergsön and Ryr Nature Reserve

According to a municipal nature guide from 2009, some parts of Vibergsön were accessible from the water. According to a municipal nature guide from 2009, a passage under the railway in the eastern part of Vibergsön provided access by land. Ryr Nature Reserve is in the vicinity of Köpmannebro on a peninsula. It covers 102 hectares; its separate sections are connected by walking trails. As trail conditions may change, check them before setting out on a hike. The difference is clear when choosing what to focus on: Köpmannebro is associated with the lock and railway history, Vibergsön with named access points by water and land, while Ryr is a nearby nature reserve with connected walking trails.
