Dals Långed is located on Lake Råvarpen. Art and education, the Dalsland Canal and nearby trails offer different reasons to choose the town as a travel destination.

Canal, lakes and swimming area

In Dals Långed, the Dalsland Canal runs between Råvarpen and Laxsjön, passing through six locks and by two power stations. Långbron Lock is number 15 on the canal and connects Lake Långbrohöljen with Laxsjön. The municipal swimming area at Kampudden is located on Långbrohöljen. The canal route and a named swimming area thus represent two different ways the town is connected to the water.

When Långbron Lock is open, the lock café serves canal-themed ice cream and waffles; visitors can also watch the boats passing through. The café is open in connection with lock operations. Check whether the lock is open before your visit. Opposite Stenebyskolan in the centre, there is a guest harbour and a parking area for eight cars.

Art and history

Stenebyskolan is part of the University of Gothenburg and offers arts and crafts programmes in wood, metal and textiles. It also holds summer courses each year for working professionals and curious beginners. Check the specific course dates before your trip. Steneby Konsthall focuses on material-based art and design in its exhibitions and events, bringing national and international creatives to Dals Långed.

The annual art walk in Dalsland is also part of the town’s cultural profile, with Dals Långed as one of its centres. If the art walk is the reason for your trip, plan around the dates for that year. Another link to the past is Dals Långed Church: it includes a schoolhouse dating from the 1880s, while the church itself was inaugurated in 1972. These dates therefore refer to different parts or events.

Trails and nature at different scales

The three Motionsspåren Södra exercise and walking trails in Dals Långed are between 4 and 7 kilometres long. The ski cabin above Ekhagsskolan and Ekhagsvallen serves as a starting point for several exercise routes. At 45 kilometres, the second stage of the Lelångeleden is much longer and runs from Gustavsfors to Dals Långed. These distances give you an initial guide to choosing between the local trails and this stage.

For a cycling route, the national Unionsleden runs from Bengtsfors to Dals Långed. The route follows an old railway embankment alongside the Dalsland Canal. Check the surface condition and signage before setting off. Another option for walks and exploring is Ånäsebäcken Nature Reserve, about 5 kilometres south of Dals Långed on Road 2218, also known as Route 2218 – Vackra byars väg. Baldersnäs lies just north of Dals Långed and is also a nature reserve.

Choose your stay around your interests

Those primarily interested in art will find several cultural points of interest at Stenebyskolan, the art gallery and the annual art walk; the summer courses have their own dates. Those who want to focus more on the water can explore the location on Lake Råvarpen, the canal route, Kampudden and Långbron Lock. When choosing a route, the 4-to-7-kilometre Motionsspåren Södra trails are clearly different from the 45-kilometre second stage of the Lelångeleden; the Unionsleden also offers a named cycling connection between Bengtsfors and Dals Långed. The combination that suits your trip depends on whether you want to focus on culture, water or a particular route.
