Harkie combines a concise settlement history with opportunities for outdoor recreation. Historic routes, the communal bathing area and the harbour offer different points of reference when choosing a place to stay. You can consider whether you are more interested in cultural history, activities along the trails or spending time by the water.
Bathing Area and Harbour
The communal bathing area of Harkie-Kärrbo is at the end of Harkievägen. A portable toilet is available at the bathing area. As this is a communal bathing area, check the local rules for its use before visiting. Please do not jump from the bathing jetty.
A municipal plan, revised on 5 September 2024, lists a bathing jetty and an access road at the bathing area. Local rules for use are important when planning a specific visit; the communal nature of the area is also part of the picture, alongside the facilities mentioned.
At Harkie Harbour, there is a marked guest berth west of the breakwater. If you would like to use it, check the local conditions for guests. The harbour is about 1.60 metres deep. This is an approximate figure: the water depth may vary depending on the water level of Lake Mälaren. When planning a visit by boat, the marked berth and the water-level-dependent depth are therefore two separate considerations.
Historical Traces
At the end of the Middle Ages, Harkie was a village with two farms. The routes also offer a glimpse into the area’s development over time: the eastern main road to Harkie still follows essentially the same alignment as it did in the 17th century. Some of the earliest known routes in Harkie are still in use.
Smaller roads and paths connecting to the rest of the built-up area in Harkie are shown on maps from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The registered archaeological monuments in Harkie mainly include graves, settlement remains and stone rows. Taken together, these subjects trace different historical layers: from the village with its two farms to the route of an older main road, and on to the smaller roads and archaeological monuments.
Outdoor Recreation
The countryside around Harkie offers good opportunities for recreation and outdoor activities. Harkievägen is considered a valuable recreation corridor and is used to travel between different destinations in the area. The planning area that includes Harkie also has routes used for horse riding and cycling. For trip planning, these details can be distinguished: Harkievägen is associated with travel between destinations, while the routes in the planning area are identified as being used for horse riding and cycling.
Most of the planning area that includes Harkie lies within Sweden’s national interest area for mobile outdoor recreation in the Mälaren area with its islands and shorelines, in accordance with Chapter 4, Section 2 of the Swedish Environmental Code. Alongside its historical traces, outdoor recreation is therefore one of the important themes for a stay in Harkie.
When making your choice, you can weigh these themes against one another: the settlement and route history offers a historical perspective on Harkie; the bathing area, harbour and routes used within the planning area represent different forms of outdoor recreation. Which aspect matters more for your stay may also guide your search for a holiday rental in Harkie.
