The Museistråket trail leads to historic objects and buildings connected with Köping. You can explore it at your own pace or learn about the history on a guided tour. This gives you two different ways to discover the local history: explore independently or learn about it with a guide.

Farms, Crafts and Collections

Nyströmska gården dates back to the 17th century and was used as a carpenter’s farm for three generations from 1870 onwards. It is the last surviving Ågård in Köping. The carpentry workshop has been preserved with almost all of its equipment; the machines and tools can still be used. So the focus is not only on the history of a farm, but also on a craft business and its workshop equipment.

The open-air museum Gammelgården showcases building traditions, old crafts and some of Köping’s early occupations. It comprises seven buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries, including a farmhouse, a smithy, a ropewalk and a tannery. The collections add to this picture of life in a farming household: they include vessels used to prepare food, textile crafts and agricultural equipment. While Nyströmska gården is closely associated with carpentry and the history of a farm, Gammelgården presents a range of buildings, crafts and everyday objects.

Museums and Köpings kyrka

The exhibitions at Köpings Museum are dedicated to events and people from the history of Köping municipality. Köpings Brandmuseum focuses on a narrower topic: it presents the history of the city’s fire protection through firefighting equipment from the 18th century, an electric fire engine from 1901 and a fire truck from 1932.

Other collections take a look at transport and technology. The KUJ järnvägsmuseum displays the steam locomotive Patric Reuterswärd, two passenger cars and a handcar. At the Bil- och teknikmuseet, a historic car workshop from the 1920s is presented alongside an exhibition on the importance of Köping to Volvo during the company’s founding period. Depending on your interests, you can focus on railways, fire protection, automotive technology or the history of the municipality.

Today’s Köpings kyrka is also connected with a specific historical sequence: King Karl XI commissioned the architect Nicodemus Tessin the Younger to build it; the church was inaugurated in 1706. Those interested in architectural history will find a different perspective here than in the museums’ workshops and collections.

Hiking and Mountain Biking

Three longer hiking trails run through Köping. Separate from these is the 20-kilometre hiking trail between Köping and Arboga: the first refers to a group of trails through Köping, while the second is a specific route between the two towns. You can first decide whether you are looking for longer trails in the town or a longer route between Köping and Arboga.

Mountain bikers can choose from three purpose-built routes in Köping, each with its own stated length and difficulty level. Karlbergsspåret is 5,315 metres long and rated easy to moderate. Johannisdalsspåret covers 3,000 metres, is rated easy and has no technical sections. Skoftestaspåret is rated moderate to difficult; it has specially built trails with several drops and velodromes, as well as some challenging technical sections. A signposted cycle path makes it easier to move between the routes. The different ratings and route features provide concrete points of comparison to help you choose.

A Nature Loop and a Local Treat

Agda Östlunds park has a nature loop that encourages play, exercise and exploring nature. Four entrances provide access to the park, and lit pedestrian and cycle paths connect it. This complements the longer hiking and mountain biking routes with a different focus on experiencing nature.

For a local culinary speciality, visit Konditori Bivur. Alongside Smörgåstårta, it serves other baked goods, including Halvan, a pastry unique to Köping. Köping has plenty to explore, from historic farms and technical collections to trails for hikers and mountain bikers, as well as a local treat to sample.
