At Västanfors Hembygdsgård, furnished museum houses sit alongside a manor wing, a café and an old trading shop. You can stroll between the houses, through the manor park and around the lock area. The site brings together the history of the houses, an outdoor walking route and insights into local trading life.
Cultural history in houses and by the canal
The buildings at Hembygdsgård include Bergsmansgården, a simple two-storey farmhouse, and a historic soldier’s cottage from the village of Aspbenning. The trading shop sells locally produced edible goods and Swedish handicrafts. The annual cycle is part of the site too: Midsummer is celebrated at Västanfors Hembygdsgård every year.
Västanfors kyrka offers a different perspective on the history of the place. The present church was inaugurated in 1830, replacing a wooden church from the 1640s. Its north–south orientation is easy to see: the tower and main entrance are on the south side. The Strömsholm Canal, in turn, is now a listed historic monument and continues to serve as a waterway for tourists.
Those interested in early ironworking will find two more destinations near Fagersta: at Dunshammar, well-preserved bloomery furnaces from the Iron Age can be seen in their original setting. Trummelsberg preserves the remains of an ironworks, including slag-stone pillars and remnants of harbour piers.
Forest, views and trails with different focuses
Near Fagersta, the Landsberget Nature Reserve offers hiking trails, views over Lake Åmänningen, caves and post-glacial fields of clatter stones. One longer option in this landscape is the Landsbergstriangeln: this circular hiking route is about 16 kilometres long and passes through the Landsberget and Trummelsberg areas. The Bruksleden trail also passes through Fagersta, via Högbyn, at 241 metres above sea level Fagersta’s highest point, as well as Trummelsberg and Landsberget. At 217 metres, Landsberget is Fagersta’s second-highest point.
The shorter trails differ in their descriptions and character. Kolarbyrundan is an easy 2.5-kilometre trail with a stated walking time of 30 minutes. EskilnspĂĄret is also 2.5 kilometres long, is designated as a recreation and training trail, and is located at the exit from Fagersta towards Ludvika. FagerĂĄsen has a 2.5-kilometre illuminated trail, about one kilometre from the centre of Fagersta. In Kottmosseskogen, a forest area close to residential neighbourhoods in Fagersta, marked trails run through varied terrain of different difficulty levels.
Near Fagersta, Flobostigen at Semla is a four-kilometre nature and cultural trail.
Activities between the canal, lake and town
The Linjan cycling route runs alongside the Strömsholm Canal for part of the way and through the centre of Fagersta. For a playful outing, there is Xrundan, a digital quiz walk for children and adults that is available around the clock. Questions are answered on a mobile phone using the Xrundan app; permanently installed signs are also part of the offer.
There are two different starting points for leisure activities by the water: Fagersta Wakepark is on Lake Eskiln. Fagersta Golfklubb is set in a cultural landscape right beside Hedkärrasjön and has a modern 18-hole course. Fagersta Skatebowl offers facilities for skateboarding, inline skating, BMX and scooters.
Disc golf and tennis are also available. The disc golf course at Risbro has nine baskets and is suitable for beginners; a second course runs along the shared cycle and pedestrian path near Rönningen in Kolarbyn. Fagersta also has two fenced sand tennis courts overlooking the Strömsholm Canal and Hembygdsgård. Guests can access them with a code, and members can also enter.
