In Arboga, a medieval street plan meets marked trails and a variety of ways to explore the surrounding area. In the town centre, the streetscape, church art, and historic buildings take centre stage; the trails offer options ranging from a five-kilometre loop to longer hikes. This lets you shape your stay around culture, exercise, or excursions by the water.

Historic Town Centre and Church Art

Arboga’s town centre is one of the oldest in the country and preserves a medieval street plan. Its small-town atmosphere, stone buildings, and varied wooden architecture have earned it classification as an environment of national cultural and historical significance. Västerlånggatan is also one of Sweden’s oldest streets. The street plan, streetscape, and buildings provide several tangible ways to experience historic Arboga.

In Heliga Trefaldighets kyrka, wall paintings depict Saint Francis and his life. The church also has a Baroque pulpit carved in 1737 by court sculptor Buchard Precht. Another historic site is the Bykista: located underground in the courtyard at Västerlånggatan 1, it once served as the town’s prison. It is opened to the public during special town tours or guided walks.

Öhrströms gård is a stone house built in 1846 and renovated, with well-preserved interiors in the Late Empire style. Arboga’s town museum is located there and displays collections of silver, pewter, and alroot, made by famous masters from Arboga. In Ahllöfsparken, a medieval herb garden and an old, fully manual wooden skittle alley add to the historic attractions. Visitors can try the skittle alley.

Circular Trails and Longer Hikes

For a marked loop in the centre, try Hälsans stig: this well-marked and signposted walking loop is five kilometres long. The Ramstigen cultural and nature trail offers a different focus. With trails, maps, and information boards, it connects attractions on both sides of the Arbogaån and passes the Kalkugnsberget nature reserve, the Gärdselbäcken frog ponds, and Gålsjön bird lake.

If you’re planning a longer hike, compare the route lengths and destinations. The Säterboleden is 13 kilometres long and runs from Säterbo Church via Lugnet along the Hjälmare Canal to Finnhäll, Arboga’s highest point. For a shorter hike on this trail, you can start at Hjälmare Docka. The ten-kilometre Tjurlångsleden forms a loop around Lake Tjurlången, making it three kilometres shorter than the Säterboleden. There are three rest areas along the Tjurlångsleden, with wind shelters and barbecue facilities. Check access and trail conditions before your hike; you should also check the facilities at the rest areas in advance.

Hjälmare Canal and Trails by the Water

The area around the Hjälmare Canal, near Arboga, offers nature trails, oak avenues, and swimming spots. The Hjälmare Canal is 13.7 kilometres long in total in the Arboga area and has nine locks. A marked cycling route of almost 60 kilometres also begins at Hjälmare Docka and runs to Notholmen, where the canal meets Lake Hjälmaren. In the surrounding area, paddlers can set off from Lake Kvarnsjön, rent a canoe there, and paddle ten kilometres south to the Hjälmaren inlet without encountering any locks.

Bicycles can also be rented locally: visitors can contact Arboga Tourist Information or Hotel Rasta. When comparing activities by the water with hikes, you can choose from different route lengths and trail types; the cycling route has a named start at Hjälmare Docka and destination at Notholmen, while the Tjurlångsleden forms a loop around a lake.

Festivals and Practical Information

Arboga Medeltidsdagar takes place every year in August. The programme includes jousting, craft markets, music, and lectures. On Walpurgis Night, the traditional Valborg festival is held in Ahllöfsparken, with choral singing and a spring speech. If you’d like to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the date in advance.

Arboga station is centrally located on Centrumleden; trains and buses stop there. Rail services to Arboga run on the Mälarbanan and Svealandsbanan lines and are operated by SJ. Check timetables before travelling. Tourist Information is available year-round by email, by phone, by appointment, via its website, and at six info points in Arboga. If you plan to visit in person, check the seasonal arrangements. Outside the public summer season, private guided historical town tours can be booked for groups.
