In Härnösand, there is a range of discoveries to explore: a historic district with a street layout dating back to the 16th century, trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels, and a striking coastal landscape. Art, regional history and technology each have their own places to visit, too. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth first asking which of these aspects interests you most – and which route suits your plans.

Historic Streets and Art

Östanbäcken is a well-preserved historic district in the centre of Härnösand. Most of its wooden houses were built in the 18th and 19th centuries, but the irregular street pattern dates back to the 16th century. Today, it is one of the most important expressions of Härnösand’s Riksintresse för kulturmiljövård (national interest for cultural heritage conservation). Anyone interested in historic urban layouts will find two distinct layers of history here: the older street plan and the predominantly later-built wooden houses.

The Härnösands Konsthall displays parts of the Qvistska collection, including works by Matisse, Chagall and Picasso. It also hosts exhibitions of contemporary art. The Västernorrlands museum focuses on the history of the Västernorrland region – from the Stone Age to the present day – and combines an open-air museum with a modern indoor museum. The cultural themes therefore differ both in content and in the type of museum: art sits alongside a regional perspective on history.

Trails for Different Levels

The Gådeåleden is 5.6 kilometres long, is rated as easy, and starts in the Lövudden nature and recreation area. There are several barbecue areas and play equipment along the trail in Lövudden, while Sparrudden has a birdwatching tower. The length and rating provide clear guidance about the walk, while the places mentioned offer different opportunities to take a break or observe the surroundings along the route.

The Härnöleden is on a different scale: it follows a route of about 20 kilometres around the entire island of Härnön. Its starting point is at Härnösand Central, which is directly accessible by train or bus. Compared with the 5.6-kilometre Gådeåleden, the Härnöleden is a much longer island loop. The Grottstigen offers a different focus: it is challenging and leads to the caves outside Härnöklubb. The three trails therefore differ in length, rating and destination – a useful basis for choosing a route that suits your plans.

Coastal Landscapes Around Smitingen

The Smitingen-Härnöklubb nature reserve includes five large sea caves, rauks, erratic boulders and fields of clapper stones, as well as a sandy beach with rocks. These landscape features offer different perspectives on the area, from the caves to the stones shaped by water. Another distinctive feature is land uplift: the terrain in the reserve continues to rise by just under one centimetre per year.

Smitingens Havsbad has a large sandy beach and shallow water; there are also several beach sports courts. If you want to include a beach and sports facilities in your plans for a coastal stay, this is a place to consider. The beach and sports facilities are a distinct part of the Härnösand selection, alongside the longer circular trails and historic sites.

Explore Science and Technology, Too

The Technichus Science Center offers interactive experiences and exhibitions about science and technology. This adds an option with a different focus from art, regional history and landscape features. In Härnösand, you can shape your stay around what interests you: historic streets and art, a particular hiking route, coastal scenery, or exhibitions on science and technology.
