Many birds stop to rest and nest in the vast coastal meadows of Stornäset. The nature reserve lies on a peninsula on Alnön that juts out into the sea. Swimming, walks and local history add further highlights to your stay.
Stornäset: coastal meadows and birdlife
The peninsula and its expansive meadows give Stornäset a distinctive coastal character. Many birds use the coastal meadows to rest and nest. This connects the landscape with its importance as a resting and breeding ground. If you are interested in nature watching, one particular focus stands out here: the coast and its birdlife.
The nature reserve has accessible facilities, picnic areas and walking trails. The trails offer a way to explore the area on foot, while the picnic areas invite you to linger. Accessible facilities are also available.
Swimming, splashing and training
Alnöbadet has a 25-metre swimming pool and a leisure area where small children can splash around. This clearly describes two different water facilities: the swimming pool and an area for the youngest visitors. Alnöbadet also has an outdoor training area that is free to use and available year-round. Swimming, splashing and outdoor training offer different activities within the facility.
Walks and history
You can take a walk along the small roads of Skorven near Spikarna. This is a different way to get around than on the walking trails in Stornäset Nature Reserve: in Skorven, you have small roads; in Stornäset, walking trails. This offers two distinct options for a walk. Spikarna is a fishing village, so a walk along Skorven’s small roads also connects you to the history of this settlement.
Föreningslokalen Thor is an excellent example of an early rural Folkets hus (people’s house). Historically, it was a meeting place for workers and their families, used for events including celebrations, bazaars and New Year’s revues. The history of the building also illustrates its social role as a venue for community gatherings.
Alnö gamla kyrka was built in the early 13th century. It offers a different historical point of reference from Thor: while Thor is primarily associated with its use as a meeting place and event venue, the church’s construction date is clearly established.
Shape your stay around your interests
If you would like to focus on nature and birdlife, Stornäset is a good fit. At Alnöbadet, swimming, splashing for small children and outdoor training are all available. Skorven near Spikarna is an option for walks, while Thor and the old church offer different historical perspectives. You can tailor your choices to whichever of these aspects interests you most.
