When looking for a holiday rental in Högsäter, you can first decide what kind of outing you want to shape your stay: an on-demand crossing on the Byälven, nearby nature reserves or sites of cultural and historical interest. Each option raises different planning questions. For the ferry, check current service; at Gillbergasjön, follow the signs; for Sandåns lövskog, consider a possible ferry connection. Map and stage information can also help with planning your walk. This lets you choose a destination based on the interests that really matter for your trip.

Ferry on the Byälven

The Högsäterleden runs across the Byälven between Högsäter and Fyxnäs in Värmland. It does not run to a fixed timetable, but on demand. Check current service updates before travelling, and do not assume a fixed departure time. There are therefore two separate questions to consider when planning: the route runs between Högsäter and Fyxnäs, while the crossing time depends on demand. The Högsäter ferry is described as Sweden's smallest road ferry.

Nature reserves nearby

Two nature reserves offer different points of orientation. Near Högsäter, you can reach Gillbergasjön by following the signs from Road 175, between Värmlands Nysäter to the south and Högsäter to the north. These directions clarify the approach: Värmlands Nysäter is to the south, and Högsäter to the north. For Sandåns lövskog, also near Högsäter, one option is to take a ferry from Högsäter to the eastern shore; check in advance whether this connection is currently operating for your visit. The difference for planning is clear: at Gillbergasjön, follow the road signs; for Sandåns lövskog, consider a ferry option and check its current service.

Burial mounds and historical connections

The house-platform terrace next to the large burial mound site near Högsäter is one of the largest in Sweden. Storhögen near Högsäter is one of three burial mounds along the Byälven; according to a legend, King Olof Trätälja is buried in Storhögen. These two cultural and historical references highlight different things: the terrace is notable for its size, while Storhögen is characterised by its place in the group of three along the Byälven and the legend. The two descriptions use different frames of reference: the house-platform terrace is compared with sites across Sweden, while Storhögen is considered in relation to the number of burial mounds along the Byälven.

Maps and stages

The map package includes a map of the Nysäter–Högsäter route. As downloadable materials may be updated, check the current version before your hike. A final stage runs from Skillingsfors via the old church site at Klevane to Högsäter. The order is specific: Skillingsfors at the start, Klevane as an intermediate stop, and Högsäter as the destination. The map and stage description answer different questions: the map covers the Nysäter–Högsäter route, while the stage description gives the sequence via Skillingsfors and Klevane to Högsäter.
