Sunnemo lies in a valley that was once the course of the Klarälven. Industrial heritage and the Hyttdalen Trail along the Hyttälven reveal other facets of the area. The area around the church and the Hyttälven is a historic focal point; the Hyttdalen Trail complements it with an easy walking route. A swimming area, disc golf and seasonal bread add a range of other interests. You can tailor your stay to culture, activity or a summer culinary discovery.

Landscape and the Former River Course

Sunnemo lies in a valley that was once the course of the Klarälven. The present-day river course is 10 km west of the town. The former course explains the valley’s history, but should not be confused with the Klarälven’s current location. Anyone interested in landscape development will find a clear connection here between the valley and the river’s former course.

Church and Industrial History

The area around Sunnemo Church and the Hyttälven has long been the center of the area’s administrative and industrial history. Several well-preserved 19th-century buildings stand in this area. The church contains an altarpiece dating from 1680, whose central motif is a carved group depicting the Crucifixion. A well-preserved blast furnace ruin in Sunnemo recalls the town’s most important industry. Together, these sites and buildings offer insight into religious art and the area’s industrial heritage.

Hiking Along the Hyttälven

The Hyttdalen hiking trail starts in the town of Sunnemo, about 500 m east of the church and behind the Gubbkroken local heritage museum. It runs along the Hyttälven and passes the ruins of Sunnemo hyttan. As an easy trail, it combines activity by the river with a tangible reminder of industrial history. The trailhead can be located in relation to the church and the local heritage museum; the distance to the church is approximate.

Another example of technical heritage is located in Hyttdalen: a restored shingle planer powered by a waterwheel. The combination of machine and power source makes the historical technology easy to understand. The shingle planer complements the ruins and buildings with another example of how Sunnemo’s industrial history is reflected in individual objects.

Swimming Area and Disc Golf

If you would like to choose an activity other than hiking, consider Lidsbron and the Sunnemo disc golf course. Lidsbron is a child-friendly swimming area in Sunnemo. If you are planning a day of swimming, check the current facilities at the swimming area before your trip. The Sunnemo disc golf course has 18 holes and a par of 56; it starts at the Täppevi sports field. This means you can choose between a swimming area and a clearly defined disc golf course, alongside the riverside trail.

Summer Pastries from Gubbkroken

In summer, the Gubbkroken farm shop sells Sunnemobröd. The bread is baked traditionally in a wood-fired oven. If you would like to include local food culture in your trip, this seasonal sale is another reason to consider visiting Sunnemo in summer. The season is part of the planning: Sunnemobröd is available in summer.
