Borgvik is a well-preserved ironworks town on the Borgviksälven, reflecting Värmland’s industrial development from 1600 to 1900. Its history can be viewed from several perspectives: through iron production, historic buildings and later industrial uses. This makes the town particularly interesting for a cultural trip, where industrial heritage is not limited to a single works.

From Ironworks to Cultural Heritage Site

Iron was produced at Borgviks bruk from 1627 to 1924. Its operating period therefore extended beyond 1900; the industrial development of Värmland reflected by Borgvik covers the period from 1600 to 1900. The history of a specific works and the broader development of the region thus sit side by side on different timescales. Borgvik is also designated an area of national interest for its cultural heritage.

Borgvik has one of Sweden’s largest collections of sintered stone houses. This offers a different approach to the town’s history than the production history of the ironworks: here, historic houses take centre stage as a collection. Borgviks kyrka also draws attention to architecture. It is considered possibly the best-preserved example of Baroque church architecture in Värmland. Together, these themes show that Borgvik’s cultural heritage has an architectural dimension alongside its industrial history.

Further Chapters in Industrial History

The Sliperiet art gallery is housed in a building originally built in 1903 as a wood-grinding mill and pulp factory. Mechanical pulp was produced there. This means the industrial history extends beyond iron production to include another type of processing. The former factory building thus offers a distinct perspective on Borgvik’s industrial past.

Borgvik Museum presents the permanent exhibition Järnets väg as well as smaller temporary exhibitions. The permanent exhibition’s title takes up the perspective of iron, while the smaller exhibitions add changing content. If you are visiting specifically for a temporary exhibition, check in advance what will be on display during your stay.

Midsummer Festival and Planning Your Visit

Borgvik holds an annual Midsummer festival featuring the opening of the rapids at the blast-furnace ruins. The festival links a recurring event with a specific part of the industrial history. Individual programme details vary. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates and current programme in advance.

Where to Stay and Eat

Kungskvarnen is an old watermill dating from the 18th century and an important part of Swedish industrial history. It offers the possibility of staying overnight and eating; check availability before your trip. Kungskvarnen is therefore noted both for its historical significance and as a place to stay, without implying any particular accommodation features.

Borgviks Gård has a restaurant serving well-prepared food. Menus and opening arrangements may change; check in advance if you plan to eat there. Food and accommodation are therefore practical considerations in their own right alongside Borgvik’s cultural attractions.
