The Töcksfors Canal lies 112 metres above sea level and is Sweden’s highest canal connected to the sea. It gives the town a distinctive geographical focal point. You can also get to know Töcksfors through its industrial history, walking trails and a cycling route stage. The perspective that shapes your stay depends on whether you want to focus primarily on the canal and history or on the different route options. You don’t have to give every theme equal weight during your stay: the canal setting, ironworking and trails each offer a distinct focus.

Industrial history and historic sites

In 1797, the pastor Sven Dahlman from Holmedal and the regimental clerk Anders Atterberg from Liane received permission for two tilt hammers and two nail hammers for the ironworks “Jernmanufaturverk vid Tyxfors”. This is a specific link to ironworking in Töcksfors. If historical themes also influence your choice of destination, it provides a clearly dated point of interest.

Kioskparken is a small park featuring a replica of Sanamonskiosken and a historical exhibition. Opposite the park stands one of the old, large bar-iron hammers, which also serves as a meeting place. This means the kiosk replica and exhibition in the park face an old hammer that also plays a role in local life.

Kanalparken has seating areas and two sculptures. Alongside the industrial history, art and places to sit are also local points of interest to consider when planning your stay.

Circular trails and cycling route

You can compare the circular trails by length and type of route. Prästnäsrundan is 4 km long and follows a pedestrian and cycle path; it is one of three scenic, easily accessible circular trails that start in central Töcksfors at Kioskparken. Kärleksstigen is one kilometre shorter at 3 km and includes a footpath as well as pedestrian and cycle paths. Before setting out on Prästnäsrundan, check the current trail conditions, as they may change.

Another option is the Strandpromenaden route: a short loop along the eastern side of the canal, above Övre slussen. Here, the canal-side setting is the main feature, while length and route type are important points of comparison for Prästnäsrundan and Kärleksstigen. The three descriptions give you different ways to choose a walk.

For cyclists, Unionsleden is another option. It is Sweden’s fourth national cycle route; its third stage runs for 41.2 km from Töcksfors to Lennartsfors. This gives you the option of a specific stage between two named places. Check the current route conditions before setting off.

By Lake Foxen

Töcksfors guest harbour is in the northern part of Lake Foxen and has 14 visitor berths. For boaters, this number is a useful point of reference; availability may vary. If you’re planning to use a berth, check current availability in advance.
