Knivsta offers a variety of options for a stay: natural areas close to the centre, walks with different themes, and cultural sites with their own history. Särstabadet, a bathing spot centrally located in Knivsta, lies on Lake Valloxen. If you prefer exploring on foot, you can choose from sections of the Upplandsleden trail as well as walks focusing on art, architecture or local history.
Nature and trails around Knivsta
Easily accessible natural areas with shorelines, woodland, and old meadows and pastureland lie close to the centre of Knivsta. These include the Gredelby hagar and Trunsta träsk nature reserves. At Trunsta träsk, you can watch birdlife from the birdwatching tower; it also offers a good view of the landscape. The tower is a destination in its own right and should not be taken to indicate a specific location within the named nature reserves.
The two Upplandsleden stages described here also offer different experiences. Stage 1:1 passes Branthammarsjön. There, you’ll find a shelter and a fire pit with a beautiful view of the water. Stage 1:2 starts in Knivsta C, on the east side of the railway line at Knivsta station, and ends at Forsbyån. You can therefore choose between a stage with a named lake view and one with clearly specified starting and ending points.
Another walk explores the area’s trees: on the tree walk, you can discover 20 common Swedish tree species growing in and around the communities of Knivsta and Alsike. The description therefore covers both places, not just Knivsta.
Walks exploring art and local history
The central walk “Konst och arkitektur i Knivsta” brings together art and architecture in the town centre. To find the stops, follow a map and click the corresponding link at each one. Led on a mobile device by cultural strategist Jon Hulander, the walk takes you through central Knivsta. The title indicates the theme, while the map and links help you find your way at each stop.
“Knivsta förr och nu” takes a different approach: this mobile-guided walk presents Lennart Runnding’s account of Knivsta in the past. Together with the art and architecture walk, it offers a choice between a look at local history and a tour of art and buildings.
Church, museum and architectural history
S:t Stefans kyrka, also known as Knivsta gamla kyrka, was consecrated in 1303. It is a Gothic hall church built of grey stone. Brick ornamentation decorates the gables, the areas around the windows and the entrances. If you’re interested in architectural styles, this single building offers a chance to look at both the grey stone and the carefully placed brickwork.
The Sockenmagasinet stands beside the old church. Built in 1758, the building is now the museum of the local heritage association. Its exhibits include historical farming implements and other attractions. The railway station building is also of interest for Knivsta’s architectural history: it is the last standard-design building of its kind still standing at its original location.
Another cultural venue is Knivsta Centrum för idrott och kultur (CIK). Its performing arts venue has 398 seats, including six accessible seats. CIK is also home to four artistic installations and other works from the Knivsta municipality art collection. This means Knivsta offers a choice of different themes, from older buildings and local history to art at a cultural centre.
Cycling and activities at the bathing spot
Knivsta has an approximately five-kilometre MTB loop for trail riding. It includes both easy-to-ride and challenging sections. This describes a range of difficulty within the course, without assigning the same rating to every section. At Knivsta’s bike park, you can practise jumps and drops in a varied, fast-paced setting.
There is also a nine-hole adventure course at Särstabadet. It is paid for, and the equipment can be collected from the counter at Granna restaurang och café. The bathing spot, adventure course and cycling options offer different experiences, so when planning, consider your specific interests in swimming, walking, culture or sporting activities.
