Tärnsjö lies directly on the Dalälven and combines the river landscape with a distinctive focus on craftsmanship. There is also the Östa Nature Reserve, trails with historical connections and amenities in the town. This gives you a choice when planning your trip between time in nature, local culture and getting your bearings in everyday town life.
Water, nature and time outdoors
Östa Nature Reserve is ten minutes from the centre of Tärnsjö. Along the Dalälven, it has kilometres of sandy beaches. In the reserve, you can swim, hike, paddle, fish, watch birds and camp. This offers a range of ways to spend time outdoors: by the water, being active, observing nature or camping. You can choose based on your interests; check current conditions and facilities in advance if you have specific activities in mind.
Hiking trails with different points of interest
Ljusbäcksleden and Kyrkstigen offer different points of interest for hikers. Ljusbäcksleden is a historic church path that was already in use in the 18th century. Along Kyrkstigen, there are wind shelters with barbecue areas at Skekarsbo and Nordmyran, as well as a charcoal burner’s hut with a barbecue area at Messkog. So Ljusbäcksleden stands out for its historic character, while Kyrkstigen has specific shelters and barbecue areas. When choosing, you can consider whether the history of a church path or information about particular places to stop matters more to you.
Craftsmanship and culture in town
Tärnsjö Garveri has been operating at the same location since 1873. Since 1988, it has used exclusively vegetable tanning with bark extracts. The leather is made locally under one roof, from raw hides supplied by local slaughterhouses to the finished product. The two dates describe different aspects: 1873 marks the start of operations at this location, while 1988 marks the start of exclusively vegetable tanning. Together, they offer insight into both the craft’s long-standing connection to the town and its specific production methods.
The Olof Krans Museum is housed in Tärnsjö’s old railway station building. It provides another cultural point of interest alongside the craft tradition. If you are planning a visit, check in advance whether a visit is possible.
