The three-kilometre-long Muskötunneln takes you by car beneath the sea to Muskö. It opened in 1964 and was then Sweden’s longest tunnel. This makes the journey part of the area’s infrastructure history. On Muskö, cultural history, church architecture, and a variety of nature themes add to the picture of a stay. The tunnel is used for driving beneath the sea; buses operate on Muskö and connect with commuter trains in Ösmo.

Cultural History and Historic Buildings
The Grytholmen open-air museum features a preserved croft from the 19th century and tells the story of life among the crofters of the archipelago. In the 1840s, Grytholmen became a croft under the Arbottna säteri estate. The combination of a preserved croft and historical storytelling draws attention both to a specific building and to the lives of the archipelago’s crofters.
The open-air museum is open during the summer season; check the current seasonal program before your visit. Grytholmsdagen is held every summer on Muskö.
The history of the naval base on Muskö dates back to the 16th century. A canal dug during the Russian ravages of 1719 is now a much-loved waterway. The canal brings together a clearly dated origin and its present-day role as a waterway.
The present-day Muskö Church building was inaugurated in 1630. West of the church, a 17th-century bell tower stands on a small hill. The church is protected under Chapter 4 of the Swedish Heritage Conservation Act. The dates refer to two different things: 1630 marks the inauguration of the present-day church building, while the bell tower dates from the 17th century.
Landscape and Nature
Arbottna has grazed coastal meadows of high natural value, while Bruket has a pebble beach and surrounding rocks. The Maren wetland is considered a bird paradise. Muskö also has flowering coastal meadows that you can walk through.
To choose a nature theme, it helps to distinguish between landscape and activity: Maren is a wetland associated with birds, while the flowering coastal meadows can be explored on foot. Arbottna and Bruket offer different coastal settings, from grazed coastal meadows to pebble beach and rocks.
