Skå Church is located on Färingsö, surrounded by open agricultural land and woodland, and was built between 1170 and 1180. For travellers interested in history and a rural setting, Skå offers several points of interest. Its history stretches from roots in the Late Iron Age to social institutions of the 20th century.

Traces from Different Eras

The parish centre of Skå has roots in the Late Iron Age. Tunagravfältet includes one of the parish’s large burial mounds and is part of the nationally significant cultural environment in Skå. Together with the medieval church, it spans a long period of history: the archaeological and ecclesiastical remains represent different eras in the area’s past.

Skå Kyrkskolan also tells more than the story of a single school. It comprises four buildings from different periods; the school buildings illustrate the development of rural schools from the introduction of compulsory schooling to the present day. One of the buildings was also formerly used as a sexton’s residence. This former use adds to the picture of the buildings’ varied functions.

Barnbyn Skå offers another historical perspective. In the second half of the 20th century, it was an internationally recognised residential treatment centre for children with psychosocial problems. Its treatment method emphasised family and security rather than punishment. Unlike the longer-term development of the schools, the focus here is on a specific social institution and its approach to treatment during a particular period.

Practical Information

At Skå Festplats, you can have coffee on Thursdays from May and take a break at the café. The café is open seasonally; check before your trip whether it will be open on your chosen date. This lets you plan for a possible stop without having to follow a set order for the other cultural and historical sites.

Svanängens IP, with Allhallen, is the home base of Skå IK in Skå. If you would like to include it in your plans, bear in mind that facilities and activities may change, and check the latest information before visiting.

Skå Church can be reached by car via Route 261, Drottningholmsvägen, and then Färentunavägen. Travel 10.4 km on Route 261; at the roundabout, take the first exit towards Färentuna/Stenhamra, then continue for 6.6 km on Färentunavägen. These details give the distances between route points, not the driving time. They can help you plan your journey and decide whether the church, the history of the schools or the other historical sites will be the focus of your trip. The two distances add up to 17 km.
