Oxelösund offers a range of options for a stay: nature by the water, maritime history and culture. On Femöre, the nature reserve and marked circular trails take centre stage. Museums and exhibitions explore shipping, pilotage and coastal life; the local attractions also include a walking trail through Gamla Oxelösund, historic railway vehicles and team quests. When planning your trip, you can prioritise these highlights according to your interests.
Femöre: Nature and Trails
The municipal Femöre Nature Reserve is on the mainland in Oxelösund. It covers most of the Femöre peninsula and the surrounding sea. Two marked circular trails of the Sörmlandsleden run across Femöre: one is 2 km long and the other 6 km. The trail lengths give you a practical basis for comparing routes when planning a walk.
The Kulturstigen adds a cultural and historical perspective to the trails: the blue-marked walking trail passes through Gamla Oxelösund. Signs along the way provide information about life in the past and the construction of some of the older houses. Here, the history of the area takes centre stage, while the circular trails on Femöre offer a different route length and the peninsula’s natural surroundings. An extensive network of cycle paths also makes it easy for visitors to get around Oxelösund.
Shipping and Coastal Life
Maritime history is explored from a range of perspectives. Lotsarkivet is a small museum about the pilots who lived and worked in the Oxelösund archipelago. The Sjöfartsmuseet covers pilotage from the 17th century to the present day. It also explores the history of the port and an 80-year shipping business based on the transport of ore. The subject matter therefore ranges from the work of pilots to the history of the port and shipping.
A maritime exhibition by Sörmlands museum focuses on shipping, coastal life and the people who depended on the sea. The Skärgårdsmuseet in Gamla Oxelösund is open in summer and features an annually updated exhibition about the Eriksson fishing family at Grantorpet. Another exhibition, “Trygga vikar och farliga grund”, can be seen at coordinates in Oxelösund and explores the interplay between the sea and the people who lived off it. Exhibition status may change, so check before your visit.
Railways, Team Quests and the Harbour
The locomotive shed in Oxelösund houses a workshop where locomotives are maintained and restored. The railway museum’s vehicle hall displays numerous historic railway vehicles. Boda Borg is located in central Oxelösund and offers 24 themed quests in which teams solve tasks together. The focus differs clearly: the railway attraction centres on vehicles and their maintenance, while Boda Borg is about solving tasks together.
Oxelösund has two guest harbours; Fiskehamnen is one of them. The guest harbour at Badhusviken has a boat fuel station that is open during the summer season. If you are planning a boat trip, this seasonal opening is useful to bear in mind when planning your timing.
