Those choosing Nävekvarn as a destination will find a variety of reasons to spend time outdoors, as well as a strong focus on history. On the Sörmlandsleden trail, options range from a viewpoint overlooking Bråviken to a hike on the small island of Näset; a longer cliff walk along the coast is also possible. Other highlights include the industrial history of Näfveqvarns bruk and a bathing spot in the harbour area.
Hiking between viewpoints and the coast
Stage 37 of the Sörmlandsleden begins with an approximately 1.5-kilometre walk along a road. The stage climbs steeply to Fyrberget, a viewpoint overlooking Bråviken. On the Nävekvarn Loop, the trail climbs steeply up Nävekvarns klint and descends steeply; otherwise, the route is easy to walk and varied. So when comparing the route profiles, it is not just the views that matter: Stage 37 includes a road section and a steep climb, while the steep sections of the Nävekvarn Loop are at the klint.
The Nävekvarn Loop also passes the ruins of a 14th-century furnace. You can hike on the Sörmlandsleden trail on the small island of Näset. A longer hike over the cliffs along the coast is also possible in Nävekvarn. This offers a variety of routes: a viewpoint overlooking Bråviken, a route with a historic landmark along the way, and hikes on the island or along the coast. Trail conditions may vary by season; check them before your hike.
Stage 36 ends at Gula Kvarn. There is a bus stop there with service towards Nyköping. As the endpoint may change if the route is adjusted, check the current route before setting out. If you plan to take the bus, also check the timetable and route before travelling.
Industrial history and local life
The first blast furnace at Näfveqvarns bruk was fired up in 1623. In the 1920s, Näfveqvarn became internationally known for its cast-iron products, designed by leading architects and artists of the time. These two historical reference points illustrate different chapters: the early blast furnace and the later internationally renowned, designer products.
Svalbergsgården is a local heritage farm dating from the 18th century in Nävekvarn. There is also a historical walking route dedicated to the history of the area: it features 29 information boards with text and images by artist Elisabet Englund. The combination of text and images offers a distinctive way to explore the history of the area.
Nävekvarn Folkets Park is one of Sweden’s oldest and best-preserved people’s parks. Events for all age groups are held there; the specific programmes vary from year to year. So, in addition to historic sites, the town also offers cultural events, with the programme for the relevant year determining what is on.
Parkbadet by the harbour
Parkbadet is a long-established bathing spot in Nävekvarn’s harbour area, west of the campsite and directly below Folkets Park. The bathing spot has a bathing jetty, swings and a volleyball court. As the facilities may change, check what is available on site. Water quality and seasonal conditions may also vary; check the latest notices before swimming. This makes Parkbadet a distinct highlight alongside hiking and local history, while keeping the conditions for visiting in mind.
