Tomelilla offers several options for a stay: art and local history, cultural activities, a park in the town centre, and nature reserves near the town. Swimming and exercise add to the range of things to do. You can choose the focus of your visit according to the topics that interest you most.
Art, Culture and Local History
Tomelilla Art Gallery was built in 1965 and was one of Sweden’s first art galleries in a rural setting. The statue Artemis, donated by Carl Milles, stands in the market square. Another sculpture, Den onämnbare by Peter Tillberg, was created in 1982 and is about four metres tall. These three connections to art offer different perspectives: the history of an art gallery, a statue in the market square and a sculpture from the late 20th century.
The town’s history can also be traced through specific dates. The Tomelilla market is a longstanding tradition that dates back to 1871. A map from 1892 documents various businesses and buildings, including the innkeeper Jeppsson’s then-new hotel building in the market square, the post office and today’s railway station.
The programme at Kulturhuset includes lectures, theatre performances and music evenings. All public areas are accessible, for example, by lift; check the accessibility details again before your trip. Music enthusiasts will find a personal collection of swing and big band jazz in the Jazz Archive. It focuses on American jazz from 1940 to 1960. The programme evenings are open to everyone, but are held seasonally. Check the schedule when planning your visit.
The GPS-guided Tomelillarundan in the Shuttle app uses buildings, works of art and places to tell the story of the history, development and present-day character of the Tomelilla area. The app can be downloaded free of charge.
Parks, Nature and Exercise
Stadsparken is in the centre of Tomelilla. The park has more than 200 trees, and a pond in its northern section. It has been a popular place for walks since the 1920s and serves as a meeting place on public holidays. It therefore offers both a connection to local history and a green space for a stroll.
Skogsbacken med Väladalen is a municipal nature reserve close to the Tomelilla area. Kronoskogen Nature Reserve is in Tomelilla Municipality, a few kilometres outside the town. It borders the Tosselilla amusement park and the Svampabanan race track, and offers good opportunities for recreation. The main difference between the two areas is their location: one is close to the town, while the other is a few kilometres away.
For outdoor exercise, Aktivitetsparken has a skate park and a table tennis table. The outdoor gym at Kastanjeskolan is located between an artificial turf pitch and the Hiet woodland.
Swimming and Recreation
Österlenbadet has a 25-metre pool, a children’s pool and a combined pool with warmer water. Facilities also include a whirlpool, a dry sauna, a steam sauna and a cold plunge pool. Activities include swimming lessons and early-morning swimming, as well as regular water aerobics and Hydrohex water aerobics with video instructions. The swimming centre complements the art, local history and nature themes with different ways to enjoy the water and stay active.
