The Långa bryggan bathing pier is about 500 metres long. At its far end are a cold-bath house and a restaurant. The beach by the facility has Blue Flag status, an international environmental award. The Bjärreds Saltsjöbad area, with the Långa bryggan bathing beach and the surrounding nature reserve, is of great importance for swimming and outdoor recreation.

The coastal area is only one part of Bjärred’s character. At Saltsjöbaden, beech forest and the history of the former bathing establishment come into view; walking trails also pass houses that bear witness to Bjärred’s role as a summer retreat for wealthy residents of Lund. The former brickworks and Bergakyrkan add industrial history and architecture to the picture.

The Coast and Choosing a Route

The Löddeköpinge–Bjärred section of Skåneleden follows a coastal walking trail to the saltwater baths at Bjärreds Saltsjöbad and the Långa bryggan bathing pier. Along the route are houses that bear witness to Bjärred’s history as a summer retreat for wealthy residents of Lund. The Bjärred–Lomma stage offers a different perspective: it passes horse paddocks, built-up areas, beaches, ponds, surfing spots and pine groves, and follows the quay into the centre of Lomma. There are good public transport connections for this stage; check the current timetable before travelling. This makes the difference between the routes clear: Löddeköpinge–Bjärred links a coastal trail and bathing destinations with the history of the summer retreat, while Bjärred–Lomma passes through varied landscapes before reaching the centre of Lomma.

Beech Forest and Bathing History

At Bjärreds Saltsjöbad, paths lead through a beech forest more than 100 years old. The forest developed from park trees around the former Saltsjöbaden bathing establishment, which operated during the first half of the 20th century. This gives the landscape a specific historical connection: the former bathing establishment and its park trees shaped the origins of the forest.

Brickworks and Architecture

The former Bjersunds tegelbruk, south of the built-up area of Bjärred, dates from the mid-19th century. The Bjersunds Tegelbruksmuseum in Bjärred includes a brick kiln, a drying shed, a coal cellar, and workers’ houses and the brickmaster’s house. Taken together, these buildings trace the process from production to living conditions at the works. The former works’ periodic arch kiln has considerable cultural and historical value because few such kilns have survived. The former brickworks illustrates how a mid-19th-century brickworks operated. The two sites belong to different periods: the brickworks dates from the mid-19th century, while the bathing establishment operated during the first half of the 20th century.

In the south of Bjärred, Bergakyrkan is part of a three-wing complex. It combines modern architecture with traditional building techniques. In 1994, to mark the church’s 20th anniversary, a small place for meditation and quiet was established.
