Ullstorp is a site in the Kristianstad Basin with sedimentary deposits from the Cretaceous period. Very different timescales come together when looking at the area: Layer B is dated to approximately 83 million years ago, while the area’s history includes a written record of its name from 1466 and a cadastral map from the 19th century. A fossil search in 2018 adds a hands-on activity to this geological and historical perspective.
Layer B and the ancient marine environment
Layer B in Ullstorp dates to the earliest part of the Early Campanian, approximately 83 million years ago. This approximate age places the deposits on the geological timescale, setting them clearly apart from the dates in the area’s history. Together with Ullstorp’s location in the Kristianstad Basin and its Cretaceous sediments, the layer provides a specific chronological anchor for the geological perspective. This is a timescale of millions of years, not a single calendar year.
The sediments and fossils from Layer B point to a relatively nearshore, warm-temperate marine environment influenced by repeated marine transgressions. The technical term refers to repeated advances of the sea. This interpretation therefore describes not only an environment, but also the recurring influence of the sea on it. The age and the environmental interpretation answer different questions: when is the layer dated to, and what conditions do the sediments and fossils suggest?
Fossil search near Ullstorp
During a fossil search in 2018, participants were able to rinse sand with water at the limestone quarry near Ullstorp, making fossils easier to find. This describes a specific step in the search. By contrast, the interpretation of Layer B focuses on the much older environment suggested by the sediments and fossils. Two aspects of fossils are thus presented side by side: an activity from 2018 and a geological dating that goes back approximately 83 million years.
Written record of the name and historic village site
The oldest written record of Ullstorp dates from 1466 and uses the form “Wistorp.” This dates an early written record of the name. The cadastral map from 1835–1846 offers a different perspective on the area’s history, documenting Ullstorp’s old village site. The written record and the map thus capture different historical aspects: an early form of the name and a village site recorded cartographically.
The documented historic village site comprises three village or farmsteads associated with the village of Ullstorp. Together with the cadastral map, these three sites give the area’s history a specific spatial structure. Comparing the dates makes the shift in perspective clear: 1466 marks the written record “Wistorp,” while 1835–1846 dates the cartographic documentation of the old village site. Geological history, the history of the name, and the historic village site are distinct ways of exploring Ullstorp.
