When considering Höllviken as a destination, you can weigh up different interests: cultural history, protected coastal landscapes and walking. When looking for a hotel in Höllviken, it’s worth deciding first what you want to focus on during your stay. Foteviken Vikingaby offers an insight into the Viking Age; coastal areas and trails provide a different focus.
Cultural history to see and experience
Foteviken Vikingaby is a reconstructed village based on archaeological finds. It illustrates what a village might have looked like and what life might have been like from the late Viking Age to the early Middle Ages. Its appeal lies both in the reconstructed way of life and in the opportunity to try practical activities. These include working with ribbons, casting your own pewter jewellery pendant, axe throwing, archery and a mini archaeology game.
Protected coastline and harbour
The Skanör-Höll Nature Reserve lies on the western shore of Höllviken and preserves a very well-preserved remnant of the historic coastal grazing landscape. South of Höllviken is the kilometre-long, chalk-white sandy beach of Kämpinge strandbad. The beach is part of the Kämpinge strandbad Nature Reserve, which also includes the area east of the Falsterbo Canal. Dunes and open pine forest characterise the protected area. The landscapes are clearly distinct: Skanör-Höll is defined by historic coastal pasture, while Kämpinge features a sandy beach with dunes and pine forest.
The 1,600-metre-long Falsterbokanalen, with its movable Höllviksbron bridge, is now a popular harbour for small boats, with excellent service and a restaurant. The coast is thus not only a protected landscape, but also a harbour location.
Trails and historic connections
For planning a walk, two trail routes should be distinguished: the Skanör-Höll Nature Reserve can be explored via the marked Skåneleden trail, while the Öresundsleden passes through Höllviken. The Skåneleden website has information about the different stages of the trail. The nearest bus stop to the Kämpinge strandbad Nature Reserve is called Höllviken Höllvikstrand. If you’re relying on the bus for your plans, check the timetable for your visit.
The history of coastal transport is also tangible here: Bredeväg was a historic sea transport route to Skanör and was used until the harbour at Skanör was built at the end of the 19th century. Heavier goods were transferred from barges anchored in Höllviken to small cargo boats and towed along Bredeväg to Skanör. This describes a specific former transport route and adds the history of goods traffic to the perspective on the landscape.
Another cultural discovery is Kassandra, a bronze sculpture along Road 100 in Höllviken. It appears to have been shaped by the winds and waves of the sea. Together with Bredeväg and Foteviken Vikingaby, it offers another perspective on cultural history, from a reconstructed way of life to historic traces and public art.
