Östra Karup lies about five kilometres east of Båstad, at the foot of Hallandsåsen’s northern slope. Two themes stand out when planning your trip: the landscape along the ridge and the village’s long history. A short activity loop and historic traces offer different ways to explore them.

Northern Slope and Wetland

The Hallandsås nordsluttning nature reserve extends eastward to Östra Karup. About 15 hectares of the former shallow lake Klarningen, also locally known as Iglasjön, have been restored north of the village. These offer two distinct points of reference: the nature reserve extends eastward to the village, while the restored area to the north evokes its former character as a shallow lake. The protected hillside landscape and the history of the wetland are therefore two separate themes.

Walking Trails and Winter Activities

The Östra Karup activity loop is about two kilometres long and runs through the beech forest on Hallandsåsen’s northern slope. It starts at the car park at the upper end of Månstensvägen. Its length, setting and starting point are all clear: it is a short, woodland walk with a named starting point. At around two kilometres, the loop can be considered as a standalone nature outing rather than confused with an extended day hike.

Osbecksbokskog is a recreational area with several circular trails. This gives you a practical distinction for planning your walks: the activity loop is a single route with an approximate distance and a named starting point, while Osbecksbokskog offers several circular trails. If you want to structure your time outdoors, you can choose between a well-defined loop and a selection of trails.

A different season brings Östra Karup’s toboggan run on the hillside of the ridge into focus: children and families use it in winter, and it is very popular. Alongside hiking, it offers a winter activity distinct from a walk through the beech forest. If you’re travelling in winter, you can consider the toboggan run when choosing local activities.

Local History from the Bronze Age to Craftsmanship

The earliest written record of Östra Karup dates from 1509. Bronze Age burial mounds in the parish show that the area had already been inhabited in prehistoric times. Its history therefore stretches back further than the first written record: the written mention and archaeological traces represent different time periods.

The church in Östra Karup is dedicated to Saint Olav, also known as Saint Olof. The oldest parts of the churchyard probably date from the same period as the church’s construction. This dating is tentative; together, the dedication and churchyard offer further insight into local history.

Earlier hospitality and craftsmanship are also part of the story: Östra Karup had an inn in 1717. A sawmill and a carpenter’s workshop, where spinning wheels were made, stood beside a waterfall on the Karupsbäcken stream in Östra Karup. The themes therefore range from archaeological traces and the church to the inn and craft production.
