Ödeshög lies on the eastern shore of Lake Vättern, in the heart of Östergötland. The town brings together cultural attractions, opportunities by the water and seasonal trails. During your stay, you can choose between local history, fishing and outdoor activities as different focal points. Planning conditions also vary: fishing trips on Lake Visjön are planned for half or full days, while the ski trail at Skönatorpet is a winter-season activity.

Culture and history in Ödeshög

Ödeshög Church is centrally located in Ödeshög and originally dates from the 12th century. Only the chancel and east tower remain from the medieval church. It is one of the county’s three surviving Romanesque east-tower churches. This brings together a specific local building history and a broader context at county level.

Another cultural highlight is “Upp i luften”: this striking work of art stands in the middle of an intersection in central Ödeshög. The church and the artwork offer different points of focus—here, the history of a church building; there, a single work in a central location.

Ödeshögs Hembygdsgård is located at the southern end of Ödeshög Klockaregårdsäng Park. There are 17 historic buildings on the site, relocated here over the years. This offers a different way to experience the local heritage than looking at a single church: the focus is on several buildings and their relocation to this site over the years. Together with the church and the artwork, the local heritage farm reveals another facet of local culture.

Hiking, fishing and outdoor activities

For hiking enthusiasts, a section of the Östgötaleden between Ödeshög, Omberg and Vadstena has a special designation: STF has named the section a Signaturled Omberg. This designation applies to this part of the trail. When choosing a hiking route, both Östgötaleden and the Signaturled Omberg designation are relevant.

Lake Visjön is just outside central Ödeshög. You can fish there for perch, pike and roach. Two non-motorized rowing boats are available to rent for half-day or full-day fishing trips. These two options give you a concrete starting point for planning: you can set aside half a day or a full day for your fishing trip. If you plan to use a boat, check availability in advance.

The Klockargårdsängen activity area has play equipment, a barbecue area, a boules court and a skate park. The facilities range from play opportunities to boules and skateboarding; depending on your interests, you can include one of these activities in your stay. These four listed facilities give you a clear overview of what the activity area offers.

At Skönatorpet, there is an approximately 2 km artificial-snow ski trail in the winter season, open to everyone. As a seasonal option, it differs from the rental periods mentioned for Lake Visjön: the winter season determines when the trail is available, while fishing trips can be planned for half or full days. This clearly describes both the seasonal timeframe and the possible duration of the activities.
