Västra Ny Church gave Nykyrka its name. Together with Stone Age stone cists and nearby trails, the village brings local history together with cultural and natural attractions. When planning your visit, you can choose which sites in Nykyrka and nearby destinations to focus on.

Church and Cultural Heritage

Västra Ny Church and its surrounding cemetery are located in Nykyrka. The church was built in the second half of the 13th century. Services are held every other Sunday and on important Christian holidays; check the current calendar before your trip if you would like to attend a service.

There are several Stone Age stone cists in Västra Nykyrka and the surrounding area. Nearby Nubbekullen is home to a museum with several thousand everyday objects, as well as a small collection of paintings by August Malmström. Nubbekullen is the Malmström family home, and the Västra Ny local heritage association opens it to the public.

The garden at Nubbekullen has places to sit beneath a pear tree and in a recently built pavilion by the car park. You can enjoy food you have brought with you there. Check the conditions on site before visiting.

Nearby Trails

The Håleberget Nature Reserve has a 2.1 km orange-marked hiking trail. The nearby Östgötaleden Övralid runt circular trail is about 2.4 km long and offers viewpoints and views of Lake Vättern. Also nearby is the orange-marked, 9 km section of the Östgötaleden between Medevi and Övralid. The two shorter routes are similar in length; at 9 km, the section between Medevi and Övralid is considerably longer.

You can reach Håleberget from National Road 50 between Motala and Nykyrka by taking the road towards Kolmetorp and following the signs from there. To reach Tokanäset, a public road runs north from Nykyrka off National Road 50. There is no car park there; for the final stretch, it is advisable to go on foot or by bicycle. Check local road conditions before setting out.

Seasonal Experiences and Local Crafts

In summer, guided tours of Verner von Heidenstam’s home are offered hourly at nearby Övralid. Check the current summer schedule if you would like to plan your trip around a tour. The Farfarstugan café next to Övralid serves waffles and generous salads. As it is open seasonally, you should also check its opening dates in advance.

At Rosendal, Nykyrka 309, you can pick your own or buy berries grown outdoors. Pick-your-own and sales depend on the berry season. To the north of Nykyrka, in Kavlebäck, Drejat av Barbro sells everyday items made of clay or stoneware. Nykyrka also has an active village shop.
