Boxholm brings industrial history, hiking stages and leisure activities together in one destination. The town’s industrial heritage is particularly easy to see: it is reflected both in the former mill building that houses the Bruksmuseet and in the building material used for the church. When choosing the focus of your stay, the hiking stages differ mainly in their surfaces, terrain and landscapes.

Industrial history in the building and its materials

The Boxholms Bruksmuseum is housed in Boxholm’s oldest building, a former mill building dating from 1777. The town’s industrial history is presented through numerous objects from its years of operation, films and guided tours. The subject comes to life through the historic building as well as the objects and films, or a guided tour. If you are interested in the town’s industrial history, the museum offers several ways to explore the subject.

The church in Boxholm also has a visible connection to the town’s industrial history: it was built from slag stone from the ironworks and inaugurated in 1897. The building material points to the ironworks, while the year of inauguration places the church’s construction in time. The museum and church thus offer different perspectives: the former presents the history of the works through objects, films and guided tours; the latter connects the building to the ironworks through its materials.

Swimming, cinema and other leisure activities

Boxholm swimming pool has a 25-metre pool with several lanes, as well as a sauna and a relaxation area. Swimming, the sauna and the relaxation area offer different ways to exercise or take a break. Folkets Hus in Boxholm has a digital 3D cinema. The programme and availability may change; check current screenings before your visit.

Golf enthusiasts will find Flemminge golf course on the Svartån, on the edge of Boxholm. Boxholm ski stadium has a rest area with barbecue facilities. These leisure activities complement the cultural attractions and hiking trails, offering further options for your stay.

Choose hiking stages by landscape and surface

The Boxholm–Blåvik stage follows forest trails, gravel forest roads and short paved sections. One kilometre south of the town centre, it passes Timmeröbadet. The Boxholm–Trehörna stage is hilly and links forest and cultural landscapes; along it, you can reach Göstrings urskog. If you are mainly interested in the path surfaces, these are specifically described for Boxholm–Blåvik. Boxholm–Trehörna, by contrast, is characterised by hilly terrain and a changing mix of forest and cultural landscapes.

Hikes on the Östgötaleden can start at Boxholm railway station. From Timmeröbadet, you can follow the Östgötaleden along Gamla Timmerövägen and Anderstorpsvägen to the bridge over Lillån. Boxholm ski stadium is reached via a detour of about 300 metres; there is a rest area with barbecue facilities there. Near Boxholm, along the Boxholm–Strålsnäs stage, a shelter with a fire pit can be found in the forest near Strömmen.

Planning your stay

In Boxholm, you’ll find places to eat and drink, shops and accommodation. For hikes, the railway station is one possible starting point; Timmeröbadet is another specific starting point described for a section of the Östgötaleden. When planning, you can weigh up the named trail sections and leisure activities in town, without assuming that the stages have similar landscapes or trail surfaces.

Outside Boxholm, Lagnebrunnaeken is protected as a natural monument. This natural attraction adds another distinct focus alongside the hiking trails and industrial history. Discover more destinations: Blåvik
