A 5.2 km circular trail to the summit of Seboklint, a starting point for the Östgötaleden and historical landmarks give Falerum clear focal points for a stay. There are also protected river landscapes and views across Uknadalen. The trails and places offer different highlights, from a named circular route and trail sections to industrial and architectural history.
Hiking trails with different highlights
The 5.2 km Seboklint circular trail leads from Falerum to the summit of Seboklint mountain. Another option is the Falerum–Åtvidaberg section of the Östgötaleden, which starts at Falerum Travel Centre. After about 1 km, it crosses the Storån and then follows a gravel path towards Gärdserum. The circular trail and the section can be distinguished by their routes: the circular trail centres on the summit of Seboklint, while on the section, the river crossing, path surface and direction shape the next stretch.
The Falerum–Rumma section also offers a clear choice: in Falerum, the main trail leads to the Dacke Skans hillfort; alternatively, an asphalt road runs towards Rumma. Dacke Skans preserves the remains of an old fortification on Dackeberget. The site is about 600 m from Falerum via the Östgötaleden. From there, you can see Falerum, Uknadalen and Lake Åkervristen. The Tjustleden also connects from Falerum and runs through the entire municipality of Västervik.
River landscapes and views
The Storån near Falerum is protected as the Storån vid Falerum Natura 2000 site and lies within the Uknadalen area of national interest. Ekhultebergen Nature Reserve is about 1 km from Falerum, along the road towards Hannäs. It is another clearly identified landmark to help you find your way around the surrounding area.
Falerum bathing area offers extensive views across Uknadalen and Lake Åkervristen. Facilities include a bathing jetty, changing rooms, a barbecue area and an accessible dry toilet, which is open in summer. The view from the bathing area and the outlook from Dacke Skans take in the same landscape from different perspectives: one across Uknadalen and the lake, the other also overlooking Falerum.
Industrial history and architectural heritage
The area’s history encompasses different trades and periods. Wiaholms Garvaregård dates back to the 1740s. The Tannery Museum shows how raw hides were turned into leather at the original site. The Mariedal paper mill was established in 1815 in Falerum’s upper industrial district. An information board in northern Falerum describes the industrial heritage of this upper district, adding another perspective to the historical sites themselves.
The buildings also reveal different facets of history. Bortgården, on the edge of Falerum, is one of five protected buildings in Åtvidaberg Municipality. The farm is considered a representative, well-preserved example of farmsteads from the 18th and 19th centuries. The stone arch bridge over the Storån near Falerum is classified as a Class 1B bridge. Together, these places represent different ways of experiencing regional history: as a farmstead, a bridge and former workplaces.
Plan your journey and accommodation
The Kustpilen train between Linköping and Västervik stops in Falerum. Check current services and timetables before travelling. When choosing a holiday rental, you can decide in advance what you would like to focus on during your stay: a circular hike, the Östgötaleden, views and river landscapes, or the history of local trades and buildings. The specific trail options and historical sites offer different starting points, without requiring them all to fit into the same day’s itinerary.
