Svartå combines a Gustavian manor house with the history of an ironworks and trails of very different lengths. The Kulturslinga i Svartå is a 1.8 km walking trail through the historic industrial area; the Svartå–Ramundeboda section is 22 km long. There is also a swimming area on Lake Storbjörken. When planning, you can choose between local history, a longer hike, and time by the lake.

The Manor House and Ironworks History

Svartå Herrgård is a Gustavian manor house built in 1782 for an ironworks. A flower-filled park surrounds the manor house. Its year of construction and its connection to the ironworks provide two distinct historical points of reference: when it was built and its relationship to the works.

The history of the smithy can also be placed in a specific timeframe. The slitting mill at Svartå Bruk was built in 1872 together with a similar mill and was used in the smithy until 1933. The historic smithy in the Svartå Bruk area operated until 1947. The end dates refer to different things: 1933 marks the end of the mill’s use, while 1947 marks the end of the smithy’s operation.

Kvarntorp is one of Svartå’s oldest buildings and was built in the mid-19th century. It adds another date to the area’s architectural history, distinct from the manor house’s construction in 1782.

A Short Walk and a Long Hiking Section

The Kulturslinga i Svartå offers a short walk through the historic industrial area of Svartå Bruk. The trail is 1.8 km long and starts below Svartå hembygdsgård at Bruksgatan 11. The precise starting point and manageable distance make this a distinct way to explore the area’s industrial history.

The Svartå–Ramundeboda section is considerably longer: it covers 22 km and forms part of the Bergslagsleden. The same route is also section 3 of the Munkastigen Pilgrim Trail and runs north from Svartå toward Ramundeboda. It therefore has two trail designations, but the same stated starting point and destination. The impressive Klapperstein fields near Ekåsabränningen are also along the route. When planning which trail to take, you can compare the short walk through the historic industrial area with a much longer hiking section.

Swimming Area and Getting There

Badplats Svartå is a scenic swimming area with a diving tower on Lake Storbjörken, west of Svartå School. Seasonal conditions can vary; take this into account when planning a visit to the lake and check conditions for your preferred time of year.

On weekdays, Svartå can be reached by bus from Karlskoga or Laxå. There is also Närtrafik service from Mullhyttan or Degerfors. As transport services can change, check the timetable for your specific travel date before setting out. When looking for hotels in Svartå, you can decide in advance what to focus on during your stay: the walking trail and local history, the longer hiking section, or the swimming area at Storbjörken.
