Churches dating from two centuries, historic buildings from the surrounding area and trails from the harbour to an island shape the discoveries awaiting you in Askersund. There are also various ways to explore the water: a paddling route of about an hour, another tour into the DohnaforsĂĄn and group trips to islands.

Churches, local history and culture

Sofia-Magdalena Church was built between 1778 and 1780, after an older wooden church was destroyed in a town fire. Some elements of its Rococo style have been preserved. Landskyrkan, at the southern entrance to Askersund, dates from a much earlier period: it was completed in 1670 and is considered an example of the monumental architecture of Sweden’s era as a great power. Historic walking tours of Askersund also explore the town’s history. Olle Widell has been leading groups on these tours since 2007, showing what the town looked like in the 16th and 17th centuries and how people lived at the time.

Art and events are also part of the cultural offering. Askersunds konsthall hosts exhibitions throughout the year on a wide variety of themes. Kulturhuset Sjöängen hosts numerous events over the course of the year, and current films are shown in the Great Hall. South of the cultural centre stands the sculpture group “Insikt – Utsikt”: its individual elements can be used as play areas or seating. For changing events and film screenings, it is worth checking the schedule before your visit.

Walks, nature and swimming spots

The municipal Stadsparken Nature Reserve is in the woods near the town centre. A 1.4-kilometre accessible loop trail runs through the reserve, with five hidden geocaches along the way. It combines a walk with a small treasure hunt, without requiring a longer route.

On the outskirts of Askersund is Askersunds hembygdsgĂĄrd, a walking area open year-round with lovely views of Lake Alsen. The farmstead was inaugurated in 1933 and consists of several historic buildings relocated there from the surrounding area. In summer, a mini zoo with sheep, goats, chickens, ducks and rabbits is added. Also in summer, the MinitĂĄget train runs from the harbour to the hembygdsgĂĄrd; services may vary depending on the weather and season. Check in advance to see whether it is running.

The waterfront promenade starts at the harbour and crosses a pedestrian bridge to the island of Borgmästareholmen. There you’ll find a swimming spot with shallow water and a sandy beach in a small bay, as well as a walking area with a small playground and barbecue area. Hagabadet is another option: this municipal swimming spot is close to the central neighbourhoods and has jetties, a sandy beach, changing rooms and a toilet facility. Details about the facilities may change; check their condition before your visit.

Paddling and boat trips

The “Vildmarken runt udden” paddling route is suitable for canoes and kayaks and takes approximately one hour. It starts at the kayak launch at Borgmästareholmen, follows the shore past Kulturhuset Sjöängen and continues to Djupviken at Edö. It offers a clearly defined route if you’re looking for a paddling trip with a manageable time commitment; the stated duration is a guide.

For “Dohnaforsån – Bäversafari”, you can start either at Borgmästareholmen or at Husabergsudde; the route leads into the Dohnaforsån and towards Lindbomossen. There are good chances of getting close to wildlife there, although sightings cannot be planned. Groups can also take trips with “Trulsan & Pricken” to islands in the northern Vättern archipelago, for activities such as swimming, barbecuing or walking. The Trulsan boat can be rented by groups of up to twelve people; check availability in advance.

Events and planning your visit

If you’d like to plan your stay around an event, the Antikmarknad is another option. It is held regularly and features around 140 exhibitors and approximately one kilometre of market stalls. Dates and scale may vary. Depending on your interests, you can explore Askersund’s historic sights, walking trails, swimming spots, cultural events or paddling trips, without having to fit every activity into a single day.
