When looking for a hotel in Koskullskulle, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: the town’s history is reflected in Solbacken and at Disponentvillan; specific outdoor attractions include the park, an outdoor recreation area, and the Nautanenloppet ski race.
Historic Houses and Local History
A total of 30 historic cultural houses from various parts of Malmberget were relocated to Solbacken in Koskullskulle. The Solbacken area was developed in stages, as the houses were gradually moved there. Their origins in several parts of Malmberget and Solbacken’s step-by-step development are thus intertwined in the area’s history.
Disponentvillan adds a single building and a specific historical timeframe to this story: it was built in 1894 and served as the LKAB managing director’s residence in Malmberget until the first half of the 1980s. A municipal description from 2023 outlined the historic house’s reconstruction in Koskullskulle and its future role as an important part of the town. This makes it possible to consider its former function in Malmberget separately from its planned reconstruction in Koskullskulle.
S:t Josefs kapell is also located in Koskullskulle. In the park, the artwork “Gruvarbetare skjuter hund” has returned to its place following renovation. These places and buildings offer different ways to explore Koskullskulle’s history and visible cultural landmarks during your stay.
Koskullskulle and Malmberget are also part of Norrbotten’s technological megasystem. This includes the ore fields, the ore railway, the ore harbour, the Porjus power station, and Boden Fortress. This offers a broader regional perspective: alongside the local history of the relocated houses, both towns are connected to these five other named components of the megasystem.
Activities in Town and Nautanenloppet
Koskullskulle has an outdoor recreation area with play equipment, a pump track, and an outdoor fitness area. Each of these offers a different kind of outdoor activity. When planning your trip, consider whether play equipment, a pump track, or outdoor fitness is of interest to you.
Koskullskulle Park has illuminated seating areas and illuminated trees, inviting people to gather even after sunset. If the lighting is important for your planned visit, check the current condition of the facilities in advance.
The town’s connection to winter sports includes the Nautanenloppet ski race, which began in 1923. In the 2025 edition, participants raced in the classic style over 6 km, or alternatively over 9 km; the 9 km option was part of the competition for a perpetual trophy. After the main race, a children’s race was also held in the park on March 1, 2025. If you plan to attend a later edition, check its date and course format in advance.
A Trip Nearby
Djävulsklyftan lies between Koskullskulle and Tjautjasjaure. The access point is just outside Koskullskulle, and you can get there on foot or by bicycle. The walk from the road to the gorge is just over 3 km each way; experienced mountain bikers can ride almost the entire route. For planning purposes, note the difference between the stated walking distance and the cycling option for experienced riders.
There is also a specific local rule for snowmobile use: an area where snowmobiles are prohibited is located within Koskullskulle’s detailed development plan area. Within this zone, snowmobiling off-trail is permitted only on marked routes. Keep this restriction in mind if snowmobiling is part of your plans.
