Arvidsjaur brings together a range of highlights for your trip: Sami building traditions, local history, trails and winter sports. Lappstaden is a Sami church town; Kulturstigen is 300 metres long, and Prästtjärnsstigen is 2.5 kilometres long. In winter, cross-country skiing, biathlon and alpine downhill skiing add to the options. You can tailor your stay to the theme that interests you most.

Sami Building Traditions and Local History

Lappstaden is a Sami church town and the only one among the older surviving church towns of Sami origin to display a Sami building tradition. This means the focus is not only on the form of the church town, but explicitly on its Sami origins and construction methods.

Storstämningen is celebrated every year on the last Sunday in August with traditional festivities. If you would like to plan your trip around this recurring event, you can check the date on the calendar. Gamla Prästgården was built in 1891 and has been a museum since the 1970s. Guided tours for groups can be booked in advance; plan to get in touch beforehand. Café Hembygdsgården at Gamla Prästgården often serves waffles. Seasonal café operations may change.

Choose Trails by Length and Destination

Kulturstigen is 300 metres long and starts at Bogårdsmuren. Prästtjärnsstigen runs for 2.5 kilometres around Prästtjärnen. The two trails therefore differ considerably in length: Kulturstigen is the shorter option, while Prästtjärnsstigen forms a longer loop. Kyrkstigarna are also short trails in the town of Arvidsjaur. At Lillberget, a short hiking trail leads to a viewpoint with expansive views over Arvidsjaur and its surroundings. You can choose between short trails in town, a longer loop and a trail with a viewpoint.

The Vittjåkk-Akkanålke nature reserve lies near Arvidsjaur, outside the town centre. It has numerous hiking trails, fire pits and wind shelters. Peaks over 700 metres high and wide-ranging views offer a different experience from the short trails in town. This gives you a choice of both manageable routes and hikes through a protected landscape.

Cross-Country Skiing, Biathlon and Alpine Downhill Skiing

Rymmarstadion has a 4.5-kilometre floodlit cross-country ski trail and a biathlon facility with illuminated targets. Children and adults can develop their skiing technique there in a fun way. Prästberget has three runs of varying difficulty, from red to black. This clearly distinguishes the alpine skiing from cross-country skiing and biathlon, while the three runs cover different skill levels.

Railway Area and Practical Information

The railway area in Arvidsjaur includes a station building with a waiting room, a warehouse and office building, a loading ramp and smaller storage buildings. A seasonal steam train runs from Arvidsjaur station to Slagnäs. Check the current timetable before your trip.

Storgatan has numerous restaurants, cafés and shops. Fishing in Nyborgstjärn is free for children up to the age of 16; check the current rules before fishing. These local and leisure activities add further options for your stay alongside cultural history, trails and winter sports.
