Skärstad can be explored through its different traces of the past and areas of interest: Skärstad Church and Lyckås Manor bring architectural and art history into focus, while nature, apple growing and a cycling route offer other points of interest. Depending on your interests, the focus may be on culture, landscape or local products.
Skärstad Church: Architectural History and Art
Skärstad Church was completed in 1819 and consecrated in 1827 by Bishop Esaias Tegnér. The eight-year gap shows that completion and consecration refer to two different points in time. In 1972, the church’s chancel was decorated with a gold-toned mosaic created by Bo Beskow. Its history thus spans the construction phase in the early 19th century and a later artistic addition in the 20th century. The chancel is the liturgically prominent part of the church; the mosaic therefore anchors its art history in a specific, named part of the building.
Lyckås: Manor House and Former Narrow-Gauge Railway
Lyckås Manor was built in 1863 and has a richly detailed stucco façade. The year of construction provides a historical reference point, while the façade is a specific architectural feature. Lyckås is also home to a former station house and a goods shed, reminders of the former narrow-gauge railway between Jönköping and Vireda. Different historical themes thus come together here: the manor house as an architectural landmark, and the station house and goods shed as reminders of the former railway.
Nature in Råbyskogen
Råbyskogen is home to old coniferous forests, steep rocky terrain, marshes and small pools. The landscape includes woodland, landforms and wetlands. This offers a different focus from the historic sites: here, the emphasis is on forest, rock and wetlands, rather than construction dates or façades.
Hägnen in the Northeast
Hägnen lies northeast of Skärstad and is a popular destination for day trips. If, when planning your trip, you are looking more for a place to visit than a particular architectural history, you can keep Hägnen in mind as a separate option.
Apple Growing and Farm Shop
The Rudenstam family has been growing fruit at Rudu Ödegård in Skärstaddalen since 1942. Rudenstam’s farm shop sells fruit from its own orchards, all of its own drinks, and a wide selection of local delicacies. The combination of many years of cultivation and the farm shop’s current offerings makes this a point of interest for travellers who would like to include local products in their trip. The family’s history provides the historical context, while the farm shop makes the fruit-growing enterprise tangible to visitors through specific products.
Cycling Route Through the Valleys and Around Lake Landsjön
The road cycling route “Lakes, apples and views” passes through the green, fertile valleys of Skärstad and loops around Lake Landsjön before returning. It offers a different focus from the historic sites: the route describes a ride through valleys and around the lake, while the church and Lyckås represent architectural and transport history. If you would like to include a circular cycling route in your travel plans, its loop format provides a clear point of reference.
