Öreryd offers three distinct points of interest for a stay: the Fornminnesleden trail with prehistoric traces, the memorial to the refugee camp, and a canoe route on the Nissan. There is also Öreryd’s small white wooden church. When choosing a destination, you can first decide whether you want to focus on hiking, history or a trip on the water. The details below provide different points of reference to help you do so.

Hiking the Fornminnesleden

The Fornminnesleden in Öreryd offers routes of approximately 3 or 7 km. These approximate distances let you plan how much hiking you want to do: you can choose between a shorter and a longer route and plan the rest of your stay around it. The trail features plenty of prehistoric remains, including burial grounds from the Early Iron Age and several burial mounds. There are also remains of a wolf pit along the Fornminnesleden. The burial grounds and mounds explicitly date some of the finds to the Early Iron Age; the wolf pit is an additional, distinct type of feature. This lets you pair your choice of route with a specific archaeological focus.

Remembering Norwegian refugees

During the Second World War, Öreryd was Sweden’s largest reception centre for Norwegian refugees. A memorial stone commemorates the refugee camp and bears the inscription “Öreryds flyktingläger 1940–1946”. This provides two specific points of reference: the town’s historical role and the period recorded on the stone. The Fornminnesleden and the memorial stone represent different historical themes: archaeological traces on the one hand, and the history of wartime refugees on the other. If you choose Öreryd for its cultural themes, this contrast connects different chapters in the town’s history.

Church and historical traces

The small white wooden church is located on Road 26, Nissastigen. Two dating details are given side by side: the church is associated with the Middle Ages, while its inauguration is stated to have taken place in 1750. A gravestone with inscriptions in runes and Latin is also associated with the church. This makes it another historical focus alongside the burial grounds and the memorial stone: architectural style, the question of its dating and written traces all come together in connection with the church. Its location on Road 26, Nissastigen also gives you a specific point of reference for finding your way around.

Canoeing on the Nissan

A canoe route on the Nissan runs downstream from Öreryd to Skeppshult. Along this stretch, there are seven rest areas with wind shelters, toilets and waste disposal, as well as approved barbecue sites with firewood. For planning purposes, this water route is clearly distinct from the Fornminnesleden: the hiking trail has two approximate distances, while the paddling route is defined by its starting point, direction of travel and destination. The rest areas add specific places to stop and barbecue along the route. You can therefore decide whether to choose a hiking route based on its length or plan your trip around the canoe route and its rest areas.
