Stugun combines two distinct churches with local history, hiking trails, river views and winter sports at Jannebacken. Highlights range from Neo-Gothic brick architecture to a downhill run about 500 metres long with natural snow.

Churches and Architecture

Stugun’s old church is one of the best-preserved 18th-century churches in Sweden. It is centrally located in the village, near the banks of the Indalsälven. Its central location makes it a useful landmark for anyone focusing on the church and local history of Stugun.

Stugun’s new church offers a different architectural style: this unusual Neo-Gothic brick church has few counterparts in inland Norrland. This brings two distinct themes together: a particularly well-preserved 18th-century building and a rare regional expression of Neo-Gothic architecture.

Local History and Hiking Trail

The Hembygdsgården is a venue for Stugun’s local-history activities. The grounds include several 18th-century buildings from Skallsjön. Skallsjön was a forestry workers’ village northwest of Borgvattnet, and the buildings’ origins connect them to the history of that village. The Hembygdsgården’s house was built in the late 1750s by Pål Pehrsson, a local church builder. The date and builder give the house a specific historical connection.

The Stugubergetleden starts and ends at the Hembygdsgården. Those choosing this hiking trail have a clearly identified starting and ending point, which is also a venue for local-history activities. Stugun tourist information provides a map of the hiking trails. Before making plans, check whether the map is currently available and what access to the trail is like.

River Scenery and Fishing Piers

From Stuguberget, you can enjoy views of the Indalsälven River and the surrounding valleys. Stugun’s landscape features large, smoothly washed stones and boulders. They were left behind after meltwater carried away lighter materials such as gravel and sand. The landscape can therefore be explored through two different features: the view from Stuguberget and the stones shaped by meltwater across the terrain.

There are fishing piers along the riverbank in Stugun, adapted to be accessible to people with disabilities. If you rely on these adaptations, check the current conditions before your visit.

Skiing at Jannebacken

At Jannebacken, a drag lift takes you to the top of the downhill run. The run is about 500 metres long and has natural snow; some areas are suitable for beginners, while others are suited to more experienced skiers. The different difficulty levels make Jannebacken an option for travellers with varying skiing experience. Check current operating conditions in advance if you are planning a specific day of skiing.
