Gotlands Tofta offers several distinct options to consider when planning your trip: a sandy beach, circular hiking trails, natural forest and historic sites. You can decide in advance whether you would rather focus on time at the beach, a particular hiking route or cultural and historical impressions. Local landmarks range from a medieval stone church to a nature trail through a small forest area.
Beach and Coast
Tofta Beach is a sandy beach about two kilometres long. The strip of beach is approximately 20 metres wide. Tofta SmÄgÄrde is an EU bathing water site with a relatively gently sloping beach.
Circular Hiking Trails and Nature
The Tofta Strand-GnisvÀrdleden is a five-kilometre circular hiking trail classified as easy. The route description also includes a yellow-and-white loop of about six kilometres and a green-and-white loop of around nine kilometres. In terms of length, the five-kilometre circular trail is the shortest route mentioned; the longer loop is approximately three kilometres longer than the yellow-and-white one. The easy rating applies to the five-kilometre trail. Both loops start at the large car park at Tofta bathing area. Check the latest route information before setting out.
Tofta Beach stretches from the fishing village of GnisvÀrd in the north to the SnÄltorp nature reserve in the south. SmÄgÄrde naturskog, a small natural forest area, is near the beach. It includes areas of shifting dunes that extend from the fishing village of GnisvÀrd to Tofta södra. The named endpoints help distinguish the coastline from the dune area: SnÄltorp is the southern endpoint of the beach, while Tofta södra is the endpoint of the shifting dunes. A nature trail through SmÄgÄrde naturskog starts opposite the entrance to Tofta Strandpensionat. The marked loops and the nature trail therefore offer different themes, and their respective starting points are different.
Church and Local History
Tofta kyrka is a medieval stone church. The oldest parts of its tower date from the early 13th century. The tower provides a specific chronological reference for the church's history, while its classification as a medieval building places it in a broader historical context.
Another historic site is Tofta HembygdsgÄrd. It is run and maintained by Tofta Hembygdsförening. Activities take place there throughout the year; visitors can take part in the annual Fagning or attend flea markets. The annual frequency is specified for Fagning, not for the flea markets. As event dates and programme details may vary, check the specific date in advance if you are planning your visit around it.
Plan Your Journey
Tofta has relatively good public transport connections. Check the timetable for your specific travel date. For cyclists, a cycle path runs along Route 140 between Visby and Klintehamn, improving access for visitors. This gives you different points of reference for planning your journey: the timetable for public transport and the described cycle path between the two places.
To plan your stay, you can first decide what you want to focus on, then work out the specific details: Which loop is the right length for your day? Are you more interested in the beach and nature, or would you like to plan around an event date? The trail distances, historic sites and travel information provide different starting points without prescribing a fixed itinerary.
