When planning a trip around Stenkyrka, you can focus on different things: an archaeological burial monument, a local history collection and trails through a striking coastal landscape. The choice involves more than culture or nature; access, season and trail conditions also matter. The Wheel Cross Grave is visible from the road and easily accessible from the car park; the Lickershamn–Ireviken section of Klintkustleden, by contrast, takes about two hours and includes a challenging climb. This makes it possible to treat a cultural stop and a hike as distinct priorities for a stay.

Archaeology and local history

The Stenkyrka Wheel Cross Grave dates from around 300 to 400 AD and is 17 metres in diameter. It is visible from the road and easily accessible from the car park. For cultural trip planning, it brings together a specific archaeological subject with information about its age, size and accessibility.

The Bullada at Stenkyrka Local History Museum offers a different focus: it contains agricultural machinery, and the upper floor houses a collection of old objects. Alongside the archaeological dating of the Wheel Cross Grave, this brings local history into view. The two cultural subjects differ in both content and form.

Coastal cliffs and nature

The Törrvesklint Nature Reserve includes a 1.3-kilometre stretch of coastal cliff north of Stenkyrkehuk, in the Stenkyrka area. In spring and autumn, streams and small waterfalls form there, provided there is enough water. The season alone therefore does not guarantee these watercourses. When considering what to expect from a nature outing, both the time of year and the additional condition that enough water must be present matter.

The Jungfrun Nature Reserve includes a 700-metre stretch of steep coastal cliff northwest of Lickershamn, in the Stenkyrka area. The Jungfrun sea stack is also nearby: it is Gotland’s tallest sea stack, with its summit 26 metres above sea level. The stretch of cliff and the individual sea stack offer different scales for understanding the landscape.

Hiking around Stenkyrka

If you want to experience the coast on foot, consider Klintkustleden as a hiking option. In the Stenkyrka area, the trail runs from Törrvesklint through Jungfrun Nature Reserve and down to Lickershamn. The Lickershamn–Ireviken section is listed as 6.1 kilometres and takes about two hours. In the northern part of Lickershamn Bay there is a challenging climb; otherwise, the section is easy to manage. The duration provides a timeframe for planning, while the climb identifies the specific more challenging spot.

Another way to get active in Stenkyrka is at Gardestugan, where there is an area with a fitness trail. Check the current listing for the area with a fitness trail before your trip.
