Sunnansjö can be explored from two perspectives: traces of its former ironworks shape the village’s history, while Lake Väsman, local walking paths and a bathing area offer a different focus. When planning your trip, you can treat cultural history and outdoor activities as separate interests without having to combine them into a set itinerary.
Traces of the Ironworks
Sunnansjö Manor is a very well-preserved example of a smaller ironworks manor house that developed in the surroundings of an ironworks in the 18th and 19th centuries. Next to the manor house is an industrial area with remains of a smelting works and a hammer forge. The preserved Labbi and weigh house also recall the centuries-long operation of Sunnansjö Bruk. Together, these places show different aspects of the history: the manor house in the setting of the works and structural traces of industrial activity.
For centuries, iron cargo from Sunnansjö Bruk was transported across Lake Väsman. A power station was built in 1913 on the former Smebacken in Sunnansjö. Beside the dam and rapids is also a large mill building, cast from slag in 1845 and now in an advanced state of disrepair. These historical connections therefore date from different periods and tell the story not just of one building, but of several phases in local industrial history.
Local Heritage Museum and Autumn Market
The Sunnansjö Local Heritage Museum has a collection of local objects reflecting life in the former mining community and countryside. The Grangärde folk costume is displayed in a separate exhibition. For those interested in cultural history, different themes can be explored side by side: everyday objects, connections to mining and a dedicated presentation of the folk costume.
The Sunnansjö Local Heritage Museum grounds host an annual autumn market. It features craft stalls and bread baked on site in the baking oven. If the market fits your travel plans, check the exact date in advance so that it falls during your stay.
Walking Paths, Swimming and Exercise
Sandviksbadet bathing area is in Sunnansjö, on Lake Väsman. The village also has walking paths and an outdoor gym. This offers various ways to spend time outdoors: at the lakeside bathing area, on the walking paths or exercising at the outdoor gym. Which of these shapes your stay depends on whether you would rather plan a walk, exercise on the equipment or spend time by the water.
The Olsjö kyrkstig trail can be walked in either direction. Benches are available at several rest stops. Trail conditions can vary depending on the season and weather; take this into account when planning and check local conditions before setting off. This means your decision to take this route is based on the actual conditions, rather than simply assuming it can be walked in either direction.
Fishing in the Sunnansjö Fishing Conservation Area
The Sunnansjö Fishing Conservation Area includes about 20 lakes. Trolling is possible on the larger lakes Bysjön, Saxen, Övre and Nedre Noren, and Gänsen. Fishing permits are sold digitally. Before fishing, check the current permit options and sales information. The approximate number of lakes gives an overview of the area’s size; for specific fishing plans, however, the named lakes and the fishing method available there are what matter.
Sunnansjö therefore offers a range of starting points for planning a trip: a layered industrial history, a collection of local objects, seasonal market dates and activities by the water or outdoors. Consider which of these themes matter to you and choose your accommodation to suit your own travel plans.
