Discover Hedemora through a range of very different travel experiences: a city walk takes you through older neighbourhoods, while trails in the surrounding area offer routes of varying lengths and themes. If you’re looking for a hotel in Hedemora, it helps to first consider whether city history, nature or longer trails will shape your stay.

City walks and historic buildings

The Cultural Promenades city walk takes you through Hedemora’s oldest neighbourhoods and to buildings and places of cultural and historical interest. The route offers several glimpses into the city’s history rather than focusing on a single building.

The church is the only surviving building from the medieval town of Hedemora. It was built in the late 13th or early 14th century. Teaterladan has a much later historical connection: a wholesaler from Hedemora built it in the 1820s. These different dates give you two clearly distinct historical points of reference for a city-focused visit.

Hedemora Gammelgård is another of the area’s notable historic sites: the complex is one of Sweden’s oldest historic farmsteads and lies beside Lake Hönsan. The church, Teaterladan and Gammelgård thus represent different histories of buildings and places. If you’re especially interested in historic sites, you can include these varied examples in your travel plans.

Nature trails of varying lengths

The Hedemora Pilgrimsled passes through scenic countryside and offers opportunities for prayer, silence and reflection. It is about 130 kilometres long, with stages of approximately 15 to 22 kilometres. The route also passes every church in the parish. Its total length and stage distances make it a very different undertaking from a short walk.

A much shorter trail option is the Stadssjön Nature Reserve, in the parts of the Hovran area close to town. There, a wooden boardwalk about 300 metres long runs through the area. The route can be used on foot, for running, with a wheelchair, pushchair or walking frame. The boardwalk and the Pilgrimsled therefore differ both in scale and character: one is a short route in a nature reserve, the other a long trail with stages and opportunities for reflection.

More destinations nearby

Just outside Hedemora, Husbyringen is a 60-kilometre nature and culture trail for walking and cycling. Numerous places to visit lie along the route. This sets Husbyringen apart from both the Hedemora Pilgrimsled and the short boardwalk at Stadssjön: each has a different focus in terms of length and trail character.

Northeast of Hedemora, the historic industrial site of Stjärnsund is located in the surrounding area; it is associated with Christopher Polhem’s 18th-century enterprise. This adds a regional perspective on industrial history to Hedemora’s historic sites. When planning your trip, you can consider city history, nature trails and nearby historic destinations as distinct interests without combining them into a single excursion.
