Moratuwa can be explored through three distinct themes: the Colombo–Matara coastal railway line, its waterscapes and a long Anglican history. The railway line runs along the coast through the city. Lunawa Lagoon is in the city centre; Bolgoda Lake is associated with swimming, fishing and boating. The history of the Anglican Church dates back to 1799. If you are looking for a hotel in Moratuwa, you can first consider whether the coastal connection, a nature-related theme or church history is most important for your stay.
The Coastal Line as a Point of Reference
The coastal railway line from Colombo to Matara runs along the coast through Moratuwa. This places the city on the route between the two named places when planning your journey with this line in mind. The route provides a geographical point of reference but does not prescribe a particular length of stay: Moratuwa can be considered either as a destination in its own right or as one stop on a longer trip. The route helps with geographical orientation, while the water and church history provide local themes you can use to shape your interests.
Two Different Connections to Water
Lunawa Lagoon and Bolgoda Lake represent different connections to water. Lunawa Lagoon is a natural ecosystem in the centre of Moratuwa. Bolgoda Lake is used for swimming, fishing and boating. This distinction is useful when planning: the focus at the lagoon is its ecosystem, while the lake offers a choice of three specific leisure activities. This lets you weigh nature and recreation separately, rather than treating both bodies of water as the same experience. If you are planning a specific activity at Bolgoda Lake, check in advance what access options are currently available.
Anglican History in Moratuwa
Moratuwa's Anglican history dates back to 1799. An old Dutch building stood on the site of today's general cemetery behind Holy Emmanuel Church. It had stood there since 1675 and remained for 140 years; the building was also used as a school.
Worship services began in the building in 1799; in 1815, it was demolished and replaced by the first Anglican church in Moratuwa. The church was established under the patronage of Governor Sir Robert Brownrigg and built with funds from the government and the congregation. It was known as “Brownrigg Palliya.” From the beginning, worship services and all other activities of the Anglican Church in Moratuwa were conducted in Sinhala.
The dates mark different milestones: 1675 marks the beginning of the history of the Dutch building, 1799 the start of worship services there, and 1815 its replacement by the first Anglican church. This makes it easy to follow the chronological transition from the earlier building to the later church.
