A 12-metre-high Buddha statue carved from rock and an intricately designed gateway offer two distinct points of interest at Dowa Rock Temple. The temple is a protected heritage site in the central highlands of Uva Province; the statue and gateway are among its main attractions. This contrast between monumental rock art and carefully designed architecture offers a glimpse of the varied cultural discoveries awaiting you in the province.
Heritage across several periods
The archaeological site of Buduruwagala in Monaragala District also brings together different depictions: alongside a colossal Buddha statue are six other figures of Bodhisattvas and their companions. At the Buduruwagala Regional Museum, the focus is on antiquities of archaeological and historical value. The collection also includes objects from the Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Kandy periods. The site and museum thus offer different perspectives on Uva Province’s heritage: monumental sculptures on the one hand, and objects from several historical periods on the other.
Maligawila has its own distinct historical connection: it is home to two colossal Buddha statues dating from the 7th century CE. Muthiyangane Raja Maha Viharaya in Badulla District is considered one of Sri Lanka’s 16 sacred sites. The two places represent different facets of religious heritage, from historical sculpture to a spiritual significance that extends beyond the province.
Another heritage theme is the proposed Sri Lanka’s Tea Cultural Landscape, a tea-producing cultural landscape. Submitted for the UNESCO Tentative List in 2025, the proposal describes a landscape located partly in the Central Province and Uva Province. Its named components include tea plantations, factories, plantation bungalows, churches and Hindu shrines. Railway infrastructure along the Main Line is also part of the proposal; the route passes through Badulla. Its proposed status should be distinguished from that of a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has been inscribed on the list.
Waterfalls, forest landscapes and wildlife watching
Yala National Park extends into Monaragala District in Uva Province. Its landscapes include wet and dry monsoon forests, semi-evergreen and thorn forests, grassland, freshwater and marine wetlands, and sandy beaches. The park consists of five blocks: one-fifth is open to visitors, while four-fifths is designated as a nature reserve. Park authorities may adjust this access arrangement, so check which areas are currently accessible before going on safari. Early morning and evening are considered the best times for safaris. Wildlife-watching conditions vary by season.
Udawalawe National Park also offers year-round opportunities to see wild Asian elephants. The population is estimated at around 500 elephants. This is a different kind of nature experience from the safari timings in Yala: in one park, elephant watching is a year-round highlight; in the other, the time of day and season are important guides to planning.
At Dunhinda Falls, the scale of the landscape goes hand in hand with a walking trail: the waterfall is 64 metres high and lies about five kilometres from Badulla, the capital of Uva Province. Dunhinda Falls is considered a major tourist attraction in Badulla. Access involves a walking trail of about one kilometre; along the way, visitors may spot wild birds, butterflies, monkeys and deer. Sightings are possible, but not guaranteed.
Diyaluma Ella Falls reaches 171 metres and is described as Sri Lanka’s third-highest waterfall. Ella Gap, by contrast, offers views across Sri Lanka’s southern plains. The two natural sites show different sides of the landscape: one is a waterfall notable for its height, while the other offers sweeping views across the plains.
Getting there and getting around
For getting around by road and rail, Bandarawela is a useful point of reference: surrounding towns and places can be reached from there in a few hours by either mode of transport. If you are planning a specific journey, check current connections for your travel dates. This lets you treat the journey as a distinct part of your planning, while choosing experiences based on your interests in heritage, waterfalls or wildlife watching.
