Sabaragamuwa Province can be explored through several clearly distinct themes. In Ratnapura District, gemstone mining shapes the region’s character; there are also historical collections, sacred sites, archaeological caves and waterfalls. Sri Pada is known for a night-time ascent to watch the sunrise at the summit, while the National Museum in Ratnapura offers insights into natural and cultural history. When planning a trip, you can start with specific interests: landscapes, religious heritage or the history of gemstone mining.

Gemstones and History in Ratnapura

Ratnapura District is considered Sri Lanka’s best-known and most productive gemstone mining area. Mining has taken place for centuries in the traditional gemstone areas around the district. The National Museum in Ratnapura is located within the boundaries of the Ratnapura Municipal Council, in the historic Ehelepola Mansion. Its collections include prehistoric, geological, natural history, ethnological and anthropological objects from Sabaragamuwa District.

The zoological department displays petrified and fossilized material from the Ratnapura fauna, dated to between 120,000 and 100,000 years ago. The museum thus brings together different perspectives: geological and natural history collections alongside ethnological and anthropological objects. Together with the gemstone tradition, these offer a way to explore the region that encompasses not only its landscape but also its natural and cultural history.

Caves, Pilgrimage Sites and Religious Heritage

The Kuragala Monastery Complex is 2.25 kilometers from milestone number 14 on the Balangoda–Uggal Kalthota road. The complex includes accessible caves with ancient Brahmi inscriptions, and its grounds are designated an archaeological reserve. In Pallebedda, the Sankhapala Rajamaha Vihara & Phussadewa Tomb complex has 14 known caves. These sites combine religious heritage with distinctive archaeological features.

Sri Pada is located in Ratnapura District in Sabaragamuwa Province and can be reached by six routes. These include Ratnapura–Palabaddala, Kuruwita–Erathna and Hatton–Nallathanni. The night-time ascent leads to a sunrise at the summit; there is lighting and there are rest stops along the way. If you are interested in this kind of pilgrimage, you will find different practical details here than at the cave complexes: several named routes and a trail that leads to the summit.

Sabaragamuwa Maha Saman Devale holds the annual Saman Devale procession. The grounds are no more than 2.5 kilometers from Ratnapura–Panadura Road and extend to the banks of the Kalu River. If you want to plan your trip around the procession, check the date for the relevant year.

Waterfalls and Landscapes

Bopath Falls is a 31-meter-high waterfall in the village of Agalawaththa, within the Kuruvita Secretarial Division. It is fed by the Kuru River, which rises from springs in the Samanala mountain range. For Maduwanwela Duvili Falls, the sequence of the journey is an important point of reference: after a 1.5-kilometer drive on a passable road, the route continues with a walk through paddy fields and forest.

Roocastle Wire Bridge also offers a distinctive perspective on the area’s infrastructure. It is 25 meters long and 2.5 meters wide, and is considered Sri Lanka’s only wire bridge that can be used as a road. The examples are quite different: at Bopath Falls, the height and watercourse are the main features; at Maduwanwela Duvili Falls, it is the sequence of driving and walking; and at the bridge, its design and dimensions.

More Wildlife and Nature Experiences

The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was established in 1975 by Sri Lanka’s Department of Wildlife Conservation as a sanctuary and breeding center for wild elephants. The elephants bathing in the Maha Oya River is a special attraction. Pinnawala Zoo is home to Sri Lankan leopards, hulmans, Sri Lankan elephants and numerous Sri Lankan bird species, among other animals. Wildlife viewing thus complements the archaeological and landscape themes that are the focus at other named sites.
